DETECTIVES have been given more time to question an attempted murder suspect.

Senior police officers signed off a request to extend the 21-year-old suspect’s time in custody.

Under law, police must charge or release anyone they have arrested within 24 hours. But for the most serious crimes senior police officers and magistrates can approve requests to hold suspects for up to 96 hours.

On Sunday, detectives arrested a man, 21, on suspicion of attempted murder. It followed a stabbing in the early hours in West Swindon that left a man in his 20s needing hospital treatment.

Yesterday, Det Insp Helen Jacobs of Swindon CID, said: “If anyone has any information then I would urge you to contact police. You can give information anonymously if you prefer, but please pick up the phone and tell us what you know.”

To report information, call Wiltshire Police on 101 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
