ALLOTMENT holders say long waiting lists are a myth.

They want green-fingered vegetable fans to join them at the Shrivenham Road Allotments.

This weekend, plot-holders are hosting an open day. Would-be gardeners are able to sign up for a plot on the day, with 20 half-plots available at the allotment site.

Barbara Crook, who has been working her Shrivenham Road allotment for six years, said: “We have got a passion for our plots and we would love to see other people who have got a similar passion, but didn’t know there were plots available.”

The site is now managed by South Swindon Parish Council, who have offered to clear and rotovate plots for new allotment holders. From October, a half-plot will cost £35 for a year for someone living outside the parish and £23 for parishioners.

Barbara said: “A lot of people are daunted when they come down and see a plot with waist-high grass. It puts them off. They come down, dig for a week and they give up.”

For Barbara, working an allotment is an ideal way to spend her day: “It’s a fantastic hobby. It keeps you fit, makes you get out of bed and gives you plenty of fresh air.”

The Shrivenham Road Allotments open day is on Sunday, July 22, 12pm-3pm. Parking off Marsh Farm Lane.
