The only way is a vote

I HAVE always been against a second EU referendum. However having watched the Tory party slitting its throat over how we leave the EU, leaving parliament in paralysis over a final exit agreement, I am now coming of the opinion that we the people do need to vote on the matter.

Only we the people can stop this parliamentary stalemate, the governing party are incapable of doing so, as too many of them hold uncompromising fanatical views on the EU, resulting in their blinkered vision blinding them to alternatives. Last year’s General Election compounded things, when we the electorate elected a parliament with a clear remain majority even though we knew that it would be these MPs who would be charged with carrying out the referendum decision.

A second vote that is clear in its instructions, as the first failed to instruct parliament on how we should leave, would remove the UK from its present quagmire.

It is now over two years since the referendum and we have still not found a way to leave the EU. Maybe on hindsight leaving was not the right choice?

You may be convinced

I enjoyed Janet Woodham’s letter (SA, July 13). A great sense of humour. Only one point to comment on, the lack of a bible is no obstacle if you have the internet, there is Bible Gateway.

But Roger Lack’s letter (SA, July 10) is a different kettle of fish - full of red herrings (strange how water creatures come into these letters).

Firstly, blue whales didn’t need to travel on Noah’s boat - despite not being fish, they live in the sea! Which is also where the plankton they eat is located.

The extent of Noah’s flood is a matter of debate, but it’s a sobering thought that there are flood myths throughout the world’s indigenous cultures.

Mr Lack also refers to a belief that Jesus was nailed to the cross so we wouldn’t be crucified. I’ve not heard that idea before.

No, he carried our wrongs on himself (time is not an issue there), so that you and I could come back to God. And he came to life again to give us new life here and now, and beyond this life too.

If you attempt to disprove the resurrection, be warned that some have tried and have been convinced that it happened.

Thanks for honesty

I’d like to say a big thank you to the very kind person who handed in my handbag to Matalan staff last Saturday. I left it on the floor and only realised it was missing hours later.

I couldn’t believe that not only was the handbag handed in but nothing was missing and that saved me a lot of worry. The staff in Matalan didn’t know who the kind and honest person was so I can’t thank them personally.
