THE trials and tribulations of growing up are brought to vivid life in Quirky Bird Theatre’s production of Spur of the Moment at the Shoebox Theatre this week.

The play by Anya Reiss concerns pre-teen Delilah, who enjoys High School Musical, swim parties and eyeing up the lodger. While her parents throw verbal grenades at one another, they barely notice their 21-year-old tenant starting to notice her.

Funny, fast and brilliantly written, Spur of the Moment was Reiss’s debut and it looks at the distance between close family relations, and the challenges faced by a young girl on the brink of adolescence. It premiered at the Royal Court in 2009, winning Reiss awards for Most Promising Playwright and Best New Play.

Spur of the Moment was described as “a blistering indictment of the way we live, parent and grow to maturity” by the Telegraph. Quirky Bird is a company whose award-winning work now tours schools and colleges across the UK.

The play runs at the Shoebox in Theatre Square, Swindon, tonight and tomorrow night at 7.30pm. Tickets are £10, concessions £8. Suitable for ages 13 plus, the play contains occasional strong language and scenes of implied sexual contact.
