SMUGGLED cigarettes and alcohol were found stashed in a Gorse Hill store, police allege.

Next week, councillors will consider an application to review a licence to serve alcohol at Cricklade Road convenience store Mike PL.

In documents shared with councillors ahead of the licensing panel meeting next Friday, Wiltshire Police said they discovered packets containing more than 3,000 cigarettes and over a kilogram of loose leaf tobacco in the store.

All were counterfeit products or duty had not been paid.

When Mike PL was raided by police and trading standards officers in April, 71 bottles of foreign import were discovered, stashed in bins, a kitchen drawer, boxes and a rucksack.

The father of the designated manager, Michal Cekus, denied the rucksack belonged to him. Yet trading standards officer Natalie Hill claims he asked to retrieve a pair of nail scissors from it before police and council officers left.

Police also say conditions of the licence had been breached. Mike PL staff used dummy CCTV cameras and staff were not trained in the Challenge 25 policy, where customers who look under 25 are asked for proof of their age.

The licensing panel will have the opportunity to modify the conditions of the license, change the designated manager, temporarily suspend or revoke it.

No representations had been received from the store, licensing manager Kathryn Ashton said in a report for councillors.

The licensing panel will meet on August 2, at 1.30pm.
