A man who assaulted his girlfriend while he was on the phone to her mum smashed into a police car as he drove away after the drunken attack.

Luke Baker punched the woman twice in the face, knocking her over, after accusing her of cheating on him.

And a judge told the 29-year-old, who he said showed no remorse, he could have faced a more serious charge of actual bodily harm for the attack.

Tessa Hingston, prosecuting, told Swindon Crown Court the pair were socialising with friends on the evening of Saturday May 6.

She said the victim was not much of a drinker and did not take drugs but others were using cocaine and alcohol.

As the evening went on Baker was arguing with another man and she got between them to try and calm the situation.

But he started to be abusive to her and took her mobile from her and put it in his pocket, accusing her of being unfaithful.

She said she would leave if he handed back her phone but instead he called her mum saying swearing and telling her to pick her daughter up as she was 'kicking off again'.

Then without any prompting he punched her to the face with a haymaker to the nose leaving her stunned.

"He was still on the phone whilst administering the punch. She pushed him away. He used his right hand again connecting with the jaw," she said.

Soon after police saw his VW Golf leave Corfe Road in Toothill and followed it on to Tewkesbury Way, pulling alongside at Mannington Roundabout.

When the female officer approached his car he said 'What do you want, f*** off,' and pulled off at speed colliding with the wing mirror and door of the parked patrol car.

Although she lost sight of his vehicle she identified him by his distinctive tattoos and he was later arrested.

Baker, of Old Shaw Lane, Shaw, pleaded guilty to common assault and dangerous driving.

The court heard he had a string of previous convictions including matters of domestic violence where he punched another former girlfriend.

Richard Williams, defending, said he accepted the relationship with the woman was at an end and the collision with the police car was an accidental glancing blow.

He said his client was working, earning in the region of £400 a week, and after injuring his knee was living at the family home.

Jailing him Judge Robert Pawson said "A lot of people reading the facts of this case, that you punched a woman in the face twice rendering according to her unconscious as she collapsed, would say you should have been charged with actual bodily harm as you have been before.

"You punched her twice in the face hard enough to knock her over. Other aggravating features: you were drunk, it is not the first time you have raised a fist to a woman.

"You have shown it seems to me next to no remorse and that is a telling feature Mr Baker In the presentence report you tried to minimise what you have done.

"I understand you are taking home £400 a week. I asked and am told you have saved nothing towards costs and compensation. That is a telling feature Mr Baker."

As well as imposing an eight month jail term he also banned him from the road for two years and until he has passed an extended retest.
