SWINDON Storm’s season was brought to a bizarre end after their Division Two home clash with Bournemouth Bobcats was abandoned.

The game was halfway through its third period when the referee opted to bring it to a close, after Callum Elver picked up an injury which required an ambulance.

The Storm man suffered a broken left tibia and fibula on Sunday afternoon and was waiting for an ambulance for almost three hours.

An hour into the wait, the match officials opted to call off the season-ending tie, which had been scoreless to that point.

Storm’s offensive coach Sean Harper thanked the supporters who came to watch the final game, especially after many of them stayed to wait before the contest was abandoned.

“One of our players suffered a leg break that meant we were unable to move him from the pitch," said Harper.

"Due to the length of time it took the ambulance to arrive, the referees decided that the game should be halted having waited an hour.

“Until then, it was an end-to-end game with both teams stalling in enemy territory.

“We felt like we had the advantage and were close to scoring before the injury.

“The sunshine was hot, so it was hard going and a lot of water breaks were being taken.

“I was really pleased with the number of fans that came out to support us in the final game, so big thank you to them for sticking with it and us.

“It’s a disappointing way to end the season but that’s football.

“We are really looking forward to changing things up and getting into training earlier for next season.

“We are keen to get as many players as we can for next season, so in terms of rookie days watch this space, we also have non-contact flag team for anyone interested in keeping fit in the off-season.”

Storm finish their league campaign with one win, a victory that came against Hastings Conquerors last month.
