A MUSIC writer who went to her first concert with her uncle is holding a fundraising gig of her own to celebrate his life.

Mia Woloszczynska from Swindon, who lost her uncle Jon Jurga in May when he took his own life, has moved her Music in Mind fundraiser from August to October to coincide with the week of World Mental Health Day.

She said: “I'm holding the event as a form of recognising and celebrating the work that MIND does for people struggling with mental health, and for families and friends who have lost people to the illness.”

Mia, who recently graduated from Southampton with a first-class degree in music journalism, said she and her uncle shared a love for music, listening to music together and suggesting new songs and artists to each other.

Her most treasured memory is him taking her and a friend to their first concert to see Two Door Cinema Club.

Before the charity gig, Mia is running the Cricklade 10k to raise funds for MIND.

She said: “I set up a justgiving page before and set my target amount for £500.

"I have incredibly nearly raised my target already, which I am so grateful for. I am running the Cricklade 10K to help towards donations, and if all goes well with the event, I would absolutely love to do more gigs with donations continuously going towards MIND.”

Mia added: “For people who have lost someone to mental health, what I would say is talk about how you are feeling, as it is only since this has happened to me that I have been made aware of the unfortunate amount of people that are in the same boat.”

Music in Mind is to be held on Friday, October 12, 7pm, at Dark Room Espresso, Faringdon Road. Entry is £3.
