KEEN Swindon photographers are battling it out for the top prize at a pop-up exhibition in the town centre.

For more than a century the Swindon Photographic Society has been helping enthusiasts take better pictures.

Now, those enthusiasts will go head-to-head as their work is judged by the experts in the society’s annual summer exhibition.

Around 250 photographic prints cover three walls of the pop-up shop on Canal Walk. A further 140 digital prints are being displayed on a computer screen.

Malcolm Cole, one of the organisers, said the exhibition was open to all: “People should come along to the exhibition to enjoy the photographs and if they’re interested in finding out about their local camera club.

“This is the best work of club members from the last 12 months. It’s been selected by external judges.”

Malcolm said his favourite print from the show was a brooding black and white image of twisted hands on glass, called Sick Shadows and taken by club member Nick Pitt. He added: “I think it’s the best contemporary image the club has taken this year.”

The Swindon Photographic Society meets every week between September and May at the Western Community Centre in Rodbourne.

As well as organising talks, lectures and competitions, the society also runs practical skills sessions aimed at improving people’s ability with the camera.

The society’s annual exhibition runs until Sunday, August 19, opposite Lush on Canal Walk. Open daily, 9am-5pm between Monday and Saturday and 10am-4pm on Sunday.
