A DOMESTIC abuse victim was so frightened she was about to be stabbed that she grabbed the blade of a knife her ex-boyfriend was using to threaten her, Swindon Crown Court heard.

Joao Araujo, 34, had picked up the knife and was moving towards the woman during an argument when the incident happened.

As she gripped the blade it cut into her hand causing a deep gash that required eight stitches.

Araujo, of Queensfield, Swindon, pleaded guilty to assault causing actual bodily harm and was sentenced to seven months suspended for two years. He was also instructed to do 200 hours of unpaid work, given a three-month curfew and banned from contacting his victim for five years.

Det Con Tom Fowler said Araujo had been punished for what was a nasty assault on his victim who had been intimidated by him. The officer hoped she had been given some comfort and closure.

“I’d also like to praise her for the bravery she has shown in giving evidence in court,” he said.

“I appreciate how hard it can be for victims of domestic abuse to report what they are going through and ask for help. It is really important that anyone who believes they are a victim, or anyone who knows somebody who may be being abused, contacts police immediately. We can help provide the most appropriate support to those who need it, as well as take action against the offenders and put them before the courts. I hope that this case will encourage other victims to come forward and seek help.”
