Clamping down on car tax dodgers

WITH more than 1,000 untaxed vehicles in the county, Wiltshire Police have been out in force this month clamping down on car tax evaders.

August has seen a joint Police and Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) operation to target motorists who drive vehicles without a valid tax disc.

More than 70 vehicles have been clamped or towed away this month as a result of not having a valid licence.

Car tax can only be paid for using a valid MOT and insurance certificate, which means cars without tax are often uninsured.

Police statistics say occupants of untaxed vehicles are more likely to be involved in criminal activities involving drugs, anti-social behaviour, burglary and violent crime.

Chief Inspector Nick Elton, head of Wiltshire Police's Roads Policing Unit, said: "By confiscating untaxed vehicles the DVLA is reducing the number of potentially dangerous, uninsured and un-roadworthy vehicles on our roads, helping to make them safer places.

"This is a countywide operation and is great news for law abiding motorists and bad news for criminals.

"We are committed to helping reduce crime and making the streets safer for everyone."

The operation has been conducted using a fleet of vans specially equipped with state-of-the-art Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology.

The vans, fitted with four sophisticated scanning cameras, automatically check number plates against a list of untaxed vehicles in a matter of seconds.

"This means we and the DVLA can track down, impound and potentially crush untaxed vehicles quicker than ever before," said Chief Insp Elton.

"This is bad news for car tax evaders because any car identified as untaxed will be immediately clamped and possibly impounded and those not claimed after seven days could be crushed."

I wish the DVLA's vans would come down my road and have a look at all the Audi's parked up without tax!! They've not moved for months, they are taking up residents parking spaces and one of them has bushes growing through it's windows!!

Nice to know that while Highworth (recent story Dodge City) is policed by specials and hobby bobbies trying to cover for sickness, Wiltshire Police have enough money for fleets of vans all carrying sophisticated
cameras to catch these rabid tax dodging criminals.Couldn't a beat Bobby with a radio do the same job? and save an enormous amount of money?

As street crime and violent crime spirals out of control it's nice to know they can still find the manpower and resources to ensure we all pay our taxes.

The real question is: what the hell are we actually paying our taxes for?

If a car is untaxed then it's also likely to be un-insured and have no MOT.

If you were involved in an accident with one and could claim no compensation due to lack of insurance, I'm sure you'd be the first to moan about the police not clamping down on car-tax dodgers.

Totally agree Hi Ho Silver, people that deliberately do not pay car tax are ignoring the law, clamp em’ give em two days then crush the car. Why should the rest of us pay when these people don’t? As the article says, a lot of these vehicles are used for criminal activities.

Have you reported the car to the Council, you can do it online. I had to do this for a dumped vehicle outside my house, 2 days later there were notices on it and less than another fortnight later the car had been towed away and crushed :D

Absolutely. Just as I constantly moan that the police appear to no longer care about theft, burglary, muggings, assault and vandalism.

I didn't say they shouldn't prosecute car tax dodgers, I just pointed out how they seem to have plenty of manpower to enforce taxation laws but are mysteriously 'busy' when asked to deal with any other crime.
