POLICE footage shows the moment rogue driver Elton Qerimi pulled away from traffic officers, leading them on a 90mph chase towards Marlborough.

The 31-year-old Audi A4 was driving on just three tyres. His fourth tyre was flat, with the rubber flying off it and hitting the police car window as officers tailed him along the A346 between Chiseldon and Marlborough.

Initially, officers tried to stop him in the forecourt of the Esso garage in Chiseldon, after spotting his car had a flat tyre.

But in police dashboard camera footage shown in court and now shared with the Swindon Advertiser, Qerimi is seen jumping into his car and speeding away down the A346.

The chase, in the early hours of January 7 this year, lasted around four minutes. It ends when the Audi smashes into the verge and Qerimi escapes on foot.

Qerimi, an Albanian national living in Reading, was last week convicted at Swindon Crown Court of dangerous driving.

Swindon Advertiser:

Defending, Andrew Taylor, said most of the driving was within the white lines and the only dangerous part of the chase was when his client jumped from the moving car.

He said Qerimi put himself in more danger than others. He had run from police because he was worried he would miss the birth of his baby son, born more than two months later, if he had been arrested.

Qerimi avoided jail, with Judge Jason Taylor QC sentencing him to six months in prison suspended for 18 months. The Reading man must also complete 250 hours of unpaid work, 10 rehabilitation days and comply with a six month curfew. He has been banned from driving for 18 months.

Swindon Advertiser:

Following the sentence, PC Will Ayres of Wiltshire Police said: “Qerimi failed to stop for officers whilst travelling on the A346 in a vehicle which shed its tyre during the pursuit. He was seen swerving on the road at excess speed. It is extremely fortunate that nobody was seriously hurt.

“As a result of his actions, he is now banned from driving for 18 months and will then have to retake his test to obtain his licence. I hope this court result sends a clear message to those who fail to adhere to the laws of the road that you will be put before the court and will have to face the consequences of your actions.”
