University plans a town campus

THE University Of The West Of England plans to build a campus in the town - with North Star being the most likely location.

The new university has been branded unique because it will offer more work-based learning and be employer led.

It is hoped some of the town's major businesses will fund the university and the courses will be closely tailored to meet employers' needs.

Advanced engineering, financial services, ICT, health and social care will be a big focus in line with the Swindon economy.

The university will accommodate 3,000 students, some of them residential.

John Rushforth, the deputy vice-chancellor at UWE, said: "We will deliver teaching to employees while they work.

"The courses will be bespoke to the individual needs of employers like Honda and Intel.

"We are also looking at delivering heritage courses, which aren't available elsewhere."

He said North Star would be an appropriate site as it is council-owned, close to the town centre and has good transport links.

"From my perspective it looks like a pretty good site, but employers can still influence where the university is built." he said.

"There is a lot of work to be done and it is critical that we establish what the people and employers of Swindon want and will support, in order to make a robust case to funders and other potential investors to secure this exciting possibility."

Swindon Council leader Coun Roderick Bluh said: "If we are to be successful in attracting and keeping high-value employers, we have to be able to provide them with the right people with the right skills.

"That's why I'm so pleased we signed this agreement with UWE, because they share our vision for the town."

The negotiations to secure UWE were led by the Swindon Strategic Economic Partnership.

Businessman Rikki Hunt, the Chairman of the SSEP,said the university will be more practical than most.

"The focus on work-based learning is going to make it different," he said.

"The danger is we are losing sight of people who have left education early and are in employment.

"It is about allowing people to learn different skills in the workplace.

"We need to find out what businesses want now, but also what they will need in the future."

Day release, evening courses and Internet-based learning will all be explored.

The New Swindon Company confirmed the site would be at North Star, but building dates are still being negotiated.

The New Swindon Company's marketing manager Carol Heneghan said: "We are 100 per cent in favour of a university. It will bring vibrancy to the area and we support this.

"We are looking at how we can accommodate a university in the North Star area."

North Star is already home to Swindon College. Principal Jonquil Brooks said she welcomed the news that North Star is being earmarked as a university site. but said the college already works closely with Bath University.

"We are the biggest provider of higher education in Swindon at the moment," she said.

"We wish to continue working with any university that comes to the town so we can pool resources and share knowledge.

"We have expertise in art and design and UWE has strengths in other areas, so we can complement each other.

"Our strongest relationship is with Bath University and remains so, however."

Fantastic news!

Northstar would be a brilliant venue.

Not a proper university campus then, offering a broad range of degree courses! More an extension of Swindon College, which isn't what the town really needs.
A fullsize university campus with everything that goes with it is still needed in Swindon and the Coate Water site is still the best option.
Once again it will be second best for Swindon.

I'd be interested to know what accommodation requirements and provision will result from these plans. The town centre is already congested so as long as this is carefully thought through, it's great news.

A step in the right direction, but one reservation, how on earth is there enough room at North Star?

I guess we can say goodbye to The Oasis sports complex, then?

The Clares site is quite large, I suppose?

As for the traffic, that's another matter, and the railway access will make a detour for those on foot unless the pedestrian bridge is permitted to be used?

All questions, but on the whole the links with industry make this interesting.

I hear they are planning to rebuild the Oasis and the Link centre at some stage. Perhaps they'll move the dome?

Grumpy, We do not need a Uni in Swindon. Especially on Coate Water land. If it has to be an extension of another Uni then so be it. There is plenty of land in and around Swindon which could use a bit of regeneration, how about where you live.

I have always wanted the new football stadium to be built on the Oasis / Clares site!!

Yes, we do need a university in Swindon and not some little off-shoot of a university from another city. There is a strong case for more localised university places for the 18 - 21 year old students now and as these numbers decline in the next few years there will be a demand for places for adults (Radio 4 this morning). These adults will not want to travel long distances for their education as they are more than likely going to be parents and will want to live withing a local journey to the university. I live on the outskirts of Swindon, but I'm not one of the tree-huggers who think the 'green belt' is so precious. Large-scale developments that involve mass movement of people and traffic have no place in the centre of Swindon. The man-made, artificial lake at Coate Water is not in danger, but the land next to it, much of which is in effect a brown field site as it was originally clay pits and brick works which have been filled in, is an ideal site for a university, housing, park and ride etc.. Just get over the fact that Swindon is going to continue to expand outwards, get used to it and move on.

Thanks for so clearly illustrating the degree of seriousness which any of us should attribute to your comments on the subject

Basically I don't care less what you might think. Does anyone take any notice of the, often illiterate, comments posted here seriously? I certainly don't. I have my own views, which I will express, but I'm unlikely to be influenced by anything I might read here. If I can wind up people by what I write, then so much the better.

Wrong again Donkey you fool. Why would they pull down the Oasis? Its a major attaction and is one of the best known landmarks in Swindon.

Stop knocking the council and mind your own.

Who would want to go to University in Swindon?

Bristol - Yes
Bournemouth - Yes
Even Portsmouth, Reading and Southampton.

But Swindon?

Do you ever go on day trips to Slough, Basingstoke or Crawley?

I think not.

What happened to the dream at Coate?
Second rate dumbed down technical college. The Town deserves better.
What has Rikki Hunt done since being sacked by Burmah?

Grumpy, if you listen to radio 4 that must mean you're well into your 80's and obviously well past caring about anything. We appreciate what you did for us in the war but i think it's time youmoved on.

It takes a certain level of intelligence to listen to and understand Radio 4, something you are obviously lacking in.

Intelligence? - you tune into it at around 93.5FM and they speak in english - so not that difficult! I listen to it every day, but I don't think that fact makes my opinion to be any more important than anyone else.
