PLANS to build a wind turbine by the M4, near Swindon, have been blown off course after a clash between green energy evangelists and countryside campaigners.

The plan by landowners Matt and Rachael Partridge was to build the turbine near Membury services - but protests from horse trainers, glider pilots, and countryside campaigners saw it turned down by West Berkshire District Council. The company Energy4All, which is working on turbines at Westmill Farm at Watchfield, was to have built the turbines.

It said it was disappointed by the decision.

You have to accept that there are anti's for almost everything. I fortunately form my own opinions.

Wind turbines aren't exactly that brilliant. Don't work when there's no wind, kill many birds etc. and they're an eyesore - worse than the awful looking electricity pylons. At least the birds can sit on them.

You would think in this day and age someone could come up with a better solution.

Solar power is one way but tends to be very expensive. Why?

Also, this is an island and we have waves. Lots of waves. Why can't wave power be harnessed?

To me, solar power is the way to go but it needs to become affordable. If everyone had solar panels installed, that would save a lot of energy but again solar panel manufacturers have priced themselves out of the market.

Nuclear, the only practical solution.

All these green energy proposal cost £billions and do not appear to have durable lifespans.

The best option would be to reduce our energy use which would in turn reduce emissions. If we do it right and build on this over the years it could provide the most durable solution.
