Diesel shortage sparks panic at pumps

DRIVERS panic-buying diesel could leave the pumps dry in Swindon.

Several filling stations reported that they did not know when they would be getting their next delivery of fuel.

It is thought drivers panic-buying diesel following reports of a fuel price protest last week could be the cause behind the shortages.

Hauliers, farmers and motorists staged peaceful demonstrations at oil refineries and fuel terminals across Britain on Saturday in protest against record fuel prices.

At Wootton Bassett Service Station staff said they had run out of diesel and supplies of unleaded petrol were also running low.

One worker, who did not want to be named, said: "We haven't got any diesel. We didn't have any when I got in at 6am on Monday morning.

"I haven't got a clue what's behind the shortage, but we have been really, really busy in the last week.

"We have only got one last tank of unleaded to last us until next week as well.

"We are hoping to get a delivery soon but we're not quite sure when it is going to arrive."

Fuel supplies at the BP service station on Swindon Road were also running low.

Manager Suran Subimamaan said: "We have got 35,000 litres now but when that finishes I don't know when we are going to get any more.

"They are saying we might not get any more until after Christmas.

"That amount of fuel will probably last us about four days but Swindon does seem to be running out."

Mohammed Sabesraran, of the Harvest service station in Newport Street, said: "We have plenty of diesel for our customers, but have been stopping some heavy goods vehicles from filling up to make sure we have enough."

The Texaco petrol station in Bridge Street said there had been a shortage of diesel last week, but a delivery on Friday meant they were now fully stocked.

Ravi Kanapathy from the Texaco Fleming Way petrol station said they did have to close on Sunday morning, but because the till was out of order.

"We have been having problems with our tills for two days, but we are open again now and have 55,000 litres of diesel and petrol. We also have a delivery of another 38,000 litres coming so I don't think we'll have any problems."

Well done the adver. The predicted panic buying has occured because your good selves said that deisal was drying up yesterday.

One other thing strikes me about this artical. Why are all the petrol station workers indian? Why should they be controlling all the fuel in Swindon ay? Still at least they arnt polish I suppose - yet!
No Panic at Sainsbury's Bridgemead store yesterday.
No-one really believes what the thinking mans Beano says do they?
Because they are prepared to work the hours the indigenous population will not. Better still why don't you put you money where your mouth is and open up a petrol station yourself?
I suggest that ASDA, Sainsbuy and Tesco control the fuel market in Swindon.
When you pop into said fuel station, pub, shop, burger joint etc you'll not give a jot where they come from as long as you get what you want when you want it.
Last point, "they" who ever "they" may be are here to stay whether you vote red, blue, orange green or any other political colour. In short Keep It Real....Get Real!
Happy Christmas to you.

There is every chance that Suran Subimamaan, Mohammed Sabesraran and Ravi Kanapathy were born here and are actually British.

What does it matter who sells you your petrol?

It's the government that are ripping us off to the tune of c.70p per litre in taxation, not the petrol companies and individual petrol stations.

What's the point in fuel protesters demanding a cut in fuel prices from the oil companies when the government just slapped yet another 2p tax (a 2% increase) on a litre of petrol when it's currently at its highest ever price?

And they won't award the police their agreed pay rise because it might cause 'inflation'? The sum they're holding back from the police is £30 million per annum.

A 2p per litre tax increase on the 73 million litres of fuel sold per year in the UK generates additional revenues of over £500 million per annum for the government to squander.

And, of course, it's one of the most guaranteed inflationary factors there is.

Oh dear, I actually agree. The goverment can afford to drop duty due to the fact that VAT has increased with the rise in basic price? This would also help to control inflation. Also, I agree, what the hell has asians running petrol stations got to do with anything? As for this story in general.. what is the Adver thinking of?!? Stupid sensationalist journalism over a couple of late fuel deliveries. It is preying on human nature and is totally irresponsible. Go on Adver, print that in your web comments column.

Strange that Thamesdown buses seem to keep on running. Where do they get all the diesel to allow them to maintain their "service"?

Anyway look on the bright side chaps, no fuel, no work.....(fingers crossed)

Because Thamesdown don't buy their diesel from a petrol station...they would have their own pumps and storage at their depot. Shortages at a petrol station would not necessarily mean a shortage of overall diesel.

What we need are more taxes to stop people using there cars, eating food, buying clothes, heating their houses, working, taking holidays, eating burgers, drinking, smoking, eating sweets, not excercising, excercising, taxes to stop global warming, taxes to stop climate change, more taxes to stop people buying and selling houses and more VAT and Income tax. There that should solve all our problems. Still Incapability Brown has already done this, and oh dear the worlds still in a mess.

All you idiot moaners out there - you are wrong. I didn't mention anything rasist whatsoever, I was just observing the fact that most, if not all, of the comentators on behalf of the petrol stations, in the article, appeared to have Indian sounding names. From experience I would say that most of the petrol stations I have been in, around Swindon, have had Indian looking people serving behind the till. It is also true to say that there has been a big influx of Polish migrants into Swindon, and I have noticed that there has been an increase in the number of Polish people working in shops and restaurants. I was not insinuating that the people of Indian descent were not British or that I didn't like them because of their ethnic origin.

So shut the **** up, fools.

Oh does that mean I'm being racist if the person reading this is not a white causican? No - grow up fools.

Thanks

That does not detract from the fact that it appears to have very little to do with a "fuel shortage". Therefore, you comment appears to be a dig at asians for no real reason. Hence, people will take your comment (innocent or not) in the context which I did.
