Helping our injured heroes

AS the bodies of Royal Marine Commandos John Thornton and David Marsh were flown into RAF Lyneham last week, people wept for the fallen heroes.

But what many did not know was that arriving with the war dead on Friday were three seriously injured soldiers who were caught up in the same explosion that killed their comrades.

With this in mind, serviceman from RAF Lyneham spent the weekend at Swindon's Brunel Centre collecting money for charity group Help for Heroes.

"It's the least we can do really. People here know about the tragic losses but not those left seriously injured and in need of extensive medical treatment." said Flight Sergeant Jim Hunter.

"We see these soldiers when they return and what they have suffered can be quite horrific."

The charity, founded by ex-serviceman Bryn Parry, raises money to support service personnel seriously injured while serving in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Its ultimate aim is to provide a swimming pool and other fitness equipment at Headley Court, a specialist military rehabilitation centre.

And people in Swindon made sure Help For Heroes was well on the way to achieving its goal.

"We have had many generous donations from people of all ages," said Chief Technician Geordie Clark.

"I must be honest, it surprised me to see so many young people donate but they have really done themselves proud."

"One young lad, couldn't have been older than 14, gave me a tenner and said he had two mates in Iraq at the moment," said fellow chief tech Woody Woodbridge.

The three men - who have completed 90 years of service between them - said knowing charities like Help For Heroes exist is a great comfort to them.

"There are a lot of seriously injured personnel that come into Lyneham that the public do not see,' said Geordie.

"And it's charities like this which helps to support them as they recover - that to me makes being here incredibly worthwhile."

Brunel Centre accounts manager Rosie Dance said the centre was desperate to do something to help servicemen away on tours of duty.

She said: "There is such a big military and ex-military population around here that people are happy to help support the troops.

"There was one old chap today looked like he didn't have two pennies to rub together but he still gave £25.

"We're happy to have been part of the fundraising effort and certainly plan to do it again in the future."

Isn't it a shame that the charity of others has to be relied on in order to provide something so simple as a swimming pool? Surely the government that is sending these people to areas of danger (legally or not) should be providing these facilities as a matter of course?

VoS, I agree totally with you. This Government has rightly being accused of ignoring their obligations to returning troops. HMG have to be shamed into doing things to help. It matters not whether we agree or disagree with this or any other war. Services personnel sign up to protect our Freedoms, as the custodian of out money Government should use every resource at their disposal to make injured service personnel lives more comfortable not for them to have to queue for treatment.

These brave and heroic men and women returning from war should be given the best of everything. They dont ask to be sent over to conflicts but they go as its their duty so we should reward them as heroes..

My thoughts go out to family and friends of these two lads.
Would never knock our boys out there, but do not agree on policys sending them out there

It's no surprise to many of us to learn that the government spend more money, per head, on prisoners in this country than they do service personnel.

I can only echo the comments above: you should not ask your forces to risk their lives on your behalf if you're not prepared to equip and look after them properly.

This is just another in a long line of shameful and indefensible actions by this Labour government.

Our boys do their job in defending our country with pride and they should be honoured as heores and treated with the best facilities available when they return, physically injured or not, the psychological scars are there too.
Big Mac, I agree with what you say but on this issue it is not just a Labour failing but a Government and people of this country failing through both Conservative and Labour leadership, we need to put more pressure on the government to provide better facilities and equipment. Headley Court was used during the Falklands War (whilst under Conservative power)and did not have a pool then, so they failed too.

Dick-Turpin, Labour have been in power for 11 years. Labour sent our troops to both the two wars they are currently fighing.

Only the government can equip our troops properly and only the government can ensure they receive the best medical treatment where necessary.

So, exactly how is it not entirely the Labour government's fault that are troops are being treated so badly?

How do you suggest we put 'more pressure' on Brown & Co? They don't listen to anything the people say or want and they haven't done for over a decade.

Now then ,Snelgrove -

Nobody forces people into the armed services, they know the risks, maybe they should make their own arrangements for when they get blown to bits.

sashtaff, because they do take the risks you have the freedom to write anything you choose.

I'd defend that right to the death as do these men and women. It doesnt mean I have to agree with it.

So on your logic may I suggest that you know the risks when you cross the road or get in a car. Maybe you should make your own arrangments should, god forbid, you ever have an accident!

points well made Chowmai. If all our service personnel took that view back in 1939 we would all be speaking German now.

With an attitude like this can I suggest that you pack your bags and leave this country NOW. You do not deserve to live in a country kept free by the sacrifice of service men over the years.

The thing is, they HAVE made their arrangements.

They make a deal with 99.9% of the UK population that they will do the things that we won't - and in return all they ask is fair treatment.

Unfortunately, the 'broker' in this particular deal is the Labour government.

An inept bunch of hopeless cowards that send our forces to fight a war because Tony Blair 'thinks' it's right (because God told him so) but who refuse to hold up their end of the bargain and equip our troops correctly and to treat them with the medical care many of them so desperately need.

In years to come, this country will look back on this ten year period of Labour rule with utter shame.

In all of that, NOTHING will be more shameful than the creation of lawless wars in which fat lawyer/pretend politician leaders sent our troops to war without even the basics.

Labour are disgusting .

Big Mac. Just to let you know what a lying SOB Blair was/Is look at theses comments by him.
