Euro stars!

9:02am Wednesday 7th May 2008

ENGLAND'S players may be kicking their heels this summer during the European Championships, but the next generation of stars certainly got their continental fill over the Bank Holiday weekend.

The North Wilts & District Youth and Minors League staged its own version of Euro 2008 over two action-packed days at the County Ground, with more than 200 children aged 7-8 taking part.

Each of the 36 teams adopted one of the European nations for the tournament, and were given a flag and playing shirts to get into the spirit.

Swindon Town's chief scout Dave Warren and under 10 coach Gary Norman were on hand to identify the most promising talent, but the emphasis was on enjoyment.

The County Ground was awash with colour as family and friends added to the atmosphere with their vocal and enthusiastic support.

No overall champion was crowned, but awards were presented for the most sporting nation' on each pitch.

Co-organiser Kevan Williams said: "We drew the teams out of a hat and the kids all played their part in being that country for the day.

"We wanted to create something a bit different and I think everyone really enjoyed themselves.

"Our thanks go out to the sponsors, Mann Egerton, and all the volunteers and coaches who helped put this whole weekend together."
