Can you help solve baby bag riddle?

THE hunt is on for the owner of a bag, containing baby cards and gifts as well as a clutch of birthday presents, after it was found in central Swindon.

The bag was found on Wednesday at about 12.30pm at the site of the old canal behind Westcott Place.

I am sure the person who has lost it would really want these gifts back, so it would be great if someone came forward

Amanda Werrell

Amanda Werrell, 38, of Newburn Crescent, stumbled across it after dropping her son off at playgroup.

"It was sat on the floor next to a bollard," she said.

"I think people might have thought it was just an empty bag and that's why no one had noticed it before me.

"I peeked inside and saw all these things, brought it home and contacted the Adver so hopefully I can find who it belongs to.

"I think the gentleman who it might belong to probably lives nearby and walked home.

"He may have been having a drink around the area, as it was his birthday, and probably just forgot it there.

"There are quite a few items in there.

"There's a birthday card addressed to Matt, and quite a few people have signed it so I guess it might be from work colleagues.

"It's one of those cardboard gift bags and has baby girl' written on the outside.

"It's also got a dress, a cardigan, a soft toy, a dolly and a blanket inside.

"There are four cards in there. One is the birthday card, and the other three are addressed to the family for the baby.

"One says, to Lucy, Matt and Josie from Jen, Chris and Thomas and it's congratulating them on the safe arrival of Bella.

"The second one is to Matt and Lucy and it's from Lara, Simon and Jacob and the third card is just addressed to the Ryder family and has a bunch of names on it.

"The bag also has Virgin Experience flying lesson vouchers inside.

"I am sure the person who has lost it would really want these gifts back, so it would be great if someone came forward to collect it."

This isn't the first time the Advertiser has appealed for information about items or helped return lost objects to their owners.

After a burglar was arrested in April a camera memory card was found with family pictures and an appeal was put out for its owners to come forward.

Another appeal was made in early March when a family's laptop computer and digital camera containing important work and precious memories were stolen.

And a memory card found in November last year was returned to the family to whom it belonged in March this year.

An envelope with money found in April was also returned to its owner.

If the bag of gifts belongs to you, or you know who the owner might be, we would like to hear from you.

Call the Adver's newsroom on 01793501794 or e-mail abhargava@swindonadvertiser.co.uk.

Hello, Voice of Sanity.

Our policy is to remove comments which are illegal or offensive.

The ethos of our website is to promote freedom of speech and lively debate.

I'm sure many people are annoyed when people go off topic, but as it's not against the law, we are loathe to interfere and stumble into the realms of censorship.

Obviously, we would prefer that if people just want a good chinwag, they head to our forum where they can do just that.

However, it must be recognised that most people commenting on our stories do stick to the point and do have something interesting to say, and for that we are grateful.

Regards,

Web Team

You have a forum for discussions such as the one above. Why should these not be used?

For those of us who take an interest in the news and others' opinions on it, the drivel above is exceptionally annoying!

There are many web site users who are fed up with people flirting, failed teachers talking about how hard they now work and for such little pay, and pointless comments from other people who have too much time on their hands.

Why not set up a daily thread for people to go into to chat, flirt, pretend to be spaced out hippies etc? You could have it somewhere on the front page and it could be wiped at the end of each day. That would free up the other comment threads for sensible, intelligent discussion.

I also resent that comment on Emmy's behalf - I don't know whether you've been paying attention, but a qualified teacher isn't a failed one.

I'm pleased you consider yourself high enough in the world to develop your own abitrary scale as to what's failed and what's not, but really, grow up.

How sad, very, very sad!

Well I shall leave you chums to play and go and use a website where those who leave comments on threads stick to the subject in hand.

At least on another site I can expect to interact with people of intelligence (ie teachers who are not failures, people who don't pretend to be space hippies etc etc etc.)

You're absolutely right, VoS. What a shame the news-related comments get abused in this way. And Web Team - take a leaf out of the book of the major nationals - they happily remove the junk posts without worrying about infringing ones right to free speech. You seriously need to review your policy if you want proper debate and comment and the visitor figures that go along with that. Without change you'll soon find the whole comment site decends into anarchy and visitors will vote with their feet.

Captain Sensible, Near Swindon says...
10:43pm Sat 10 May 08

Funny how the web team are happy for muppets to fill up the threads with drivel, but make one comment about one of our major issues in this country like immigration and they censor the comments by removing them. So much for free speech, what are they so afraid if?

Voice of Sanity, Swindon says...
7:53am Sun 11 May 08

Exactly Capt. Sensible. The Web Team says it is not into censorship so will let certain individuals post nothing but drivel on these threads. Post something even slightly contentious and it's deleted pdq!!

This highlights to me the fact that this is a 'small town' paper with 'small town' thoughts!

Well you can't expect people of a higher order than you to interact with you if you don't meet the criteria, can you? That is to say, showing a modicum of intelligence is a prerequisite to intelligent conversation! The fact that you are intent on labelling some among us as "failed" despite quite evident proof that they are not naturally exempts you from the "intelligent" crowd.

Voice of Sanity, Swindon says...

Bunch of tw@ts!

I only labelled some as 'failed'. Ie those who have WASTED taxpayers money for 3 or 4 years to end up doing a job that requires none of the learned skills! Must be failed or stupid not to be working in teaching: a) failed as in UNABLE to get a teaching job as in not good enough or b) stupid as in failing to realise before starting a teaching course what the job involves before doing the training!

It must be one of those two things!

I think there is enough information there to use the electoral roll to find them - first names are given and the surname Ryder.
