A SEXUAL violence advisor has hit out at the lack of resources for rape victims.
Independent sexual violence advisor Jan Ryan has dealt with 172 victims of rape since she started working at the New Swindon Sanctuary in South Marston in February last year.
Although she sees an average of three people a week, there are only two full-time members of staff - Jan and centre manager Julie James-Kempshall based at the unit.
Jan explained: "We do have doctors, nurses and workers come in as and when required.
"But it would be great to have a team of people dealing with those who come to us.
"Currently I have to go around the county to speak to people and meet them - it would just make things so much easier if we had more funding.
"My role is to support the victims from the point they come in until the time they get to court.
"If we had more people, then we could give more time to people and that's something that could really help them. At the moment because of time constraints, we can't give them the time they deserve."
Jan has just qualified as an independent sexual violence advisor and is now in charge of supporting rape victims across the whole county. Her post is a new initiative funded by the Home Office, in partnership with Wiltshire Police and the primary care trust - and is especially aimed at those who want minimal contact with the police.
The sexual health referral centre, opposite Gablecross police station is available to provide medical help, counselling and forensic examinations for victims of serious sexual assaults, 24 hours a day.
Jan said: "I worked for victim support in Wiltshire for 13 years before applying for this post.
"This is now a step further in providing those who need our help with the support and information they require. Although it is great that we can do this, it is a lot for one person to take on."
To get in touch with the centre directly call Jan on 01793 507956 or on her mobile 07771 552131.
