STAFF at Greendown Community School are giving each other a pat on the back this week after receiving a glowing report from Ofsted inspectors.

Head teacher Clive Zimmerman said he was thrilled by the report on the West Swindon school, which identified mutual respect between pupils and teachers.

"We are very happy with the report and were pleased when the inspectors told us they would've graded us very good' if they'd had that option," he said.

"We have some points to work on but we are well on our way to achieving an outstanding grade when we're inspected again."

Lead inspector Clare Gillies cited improved GCSE results, community commitments and good primary school links as reasons for the success.

She rated the school "good with some outstanding features."

"Behind all these good things is Mr Zimmerman, his leadership team and the enthusiastic and caring teachers and other staff," the inspector said.

"Their determination to raise standards further and to prepare you well for your future lives is clear in everything that that they do."

"I consider myself very lucky at Greendown," said Mr Zimmerman.

"I have a body of staff who are enthusiastic about their job and pupils who enjoy coming to school.

"I have worked in many schools but it has never been this good."

Ms Gillies said: "The headteacher and the experienced senior leadership team have sharpened up many aspects of the school's procedures.

"Their determination to raise standards and to give pupils an excellent preparation for their lives is clear in everything they do."

Greendown's Healthy School status was noted by inspectors who said pupils had an excellent understanding of the importance of exercise, healthy diet and safe lifestyles.

Mr Zimmerman said: "We have a great deal to offer pupils including a range of after-school activities, excellent sports facilities and a healthy living policy - all of which pupils have thrown themselves into whole-heartedly."
