Fury as more cars torched

NEIGHBOURS living in a leafy Old Town Street have called for Big Brother to watch over them after a car was torched by arsonists.

A silver Citroen Zara was set alight in Quarry Road at about 4am yesterday - the fourth time cars have been targeted in recent weeks.

And that has left residents calling for CCTV to be installed to catch those responsible.

"We can't expect this sort of behaviour," said mum-of-one Gillian Nunn, 36, whose car was the latest to be set on fire.

"We didn't realise anything had happened until later in the morning when I saw police officers standing by my car.

"I thought it had been broken into but then saw it was worse than that.

"It looks like someone has smashed the back window as the fire started on the back seat."

Gillian's engineer husband Jeff, 45, will not be able to travel to work in Newport as a result of the vandalism.

"I will have to work from home, which is less than ideal," he said.

The couple say fitting cameras in the street could be a way forward to combat the crimes.

Their car was taken away to be forensically examined, but is covered by insurance.

Another resident, who did not want to be named, said: "I don't know if this is being done to try and get us out of our homes or just for the hell of it.

"Whoever is doing this has no values. This is the fourth time this has happened now - it's crazy."

A spokeswoman for Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "We attended the scene at Quarry Road at 3.57am.

"The fire was started deliberately but the cause is still being investigated."

As reported by the Adver last month, a BMW and Ford Focus were also set on fire in Quarry Road.

It proved busy weekend for Wiltshire Fire and Rescue overall, which saw the emergency service go to six different fires in the space of 24 hours in Swindon.

Firefighters went to Langton Park in Wroughton at 2.24am yesterday for another car fire, which was started deliberately.

Crews from Stratton fire station were called to the rear of Blackworth Industrial Estate in Highworth where two tonnes of bailed hay was ablaze.

Fire crews are still investigating this incident, which took place on Saturday at 8pm.

And a further spate of fires in Swindon are still being investigated after fire crews attended three incidents during the early hours of Saturday.

Fire crews from Swindon and Stratton were first called to a garage fire in Beatrice Street, Gorse Hill, at 2.33am and another car fire just half an hour later in Sandown Avenue, Old Town.

A green Renault Laguna was on fire, which stared from an electrical fault in the engine.

"You could see 15 ft flames," said owner Rita Cockram.

"Then the front two tyres burst with loud bangs.

"It woke up all the neighbours, which I'm really apologetic about."

She said the car was given to her by a friend but says she would receive an insurance payment, as the damage wasn't caused through arson.

Firefighters were also called at 3.35am to a motorcycle fire on Florence Street in Gorse Hill.

Anyone with any information on the arson attacks is asked to contact Swindon police on 0845 408 7000.

The caption under the Image of the Laguna says it was set alight, but further on down the story it says the fire was due to an electrical fault in the engine. Which one is it then?

Cars get wrecked round here every Saturday night, we are lucky if we get a crime number and a visit from the plastic plod. Why so different in the posh areas??

I will have to work from home

Tragic!

it was my vehicle that was torched in wroughton and the police have still not attended so sashstaff saying that people get treated differently in posh areas is talking rubbish and I can assure you where I live is not posh just an average street. I have been told that lots of vehicles have had damage in the village over the same night mostly windscreens smashed - we live in an age where people do not respect anything and kids are allowed out all night without any parental control.

'Posh' areas don't get treated any differently.

If anything, judging by what you read in the Adver it's the less-than-posh areas that get virtually all the police attention.

I would imagine the Adver report on car arson in Old Town because:

a) it happens virtually every weekend

b) it's near their offices

Guaranteed though, if any resident decides to take matters into their own hands and confront these people, you know who the police will arrest of course...

It's 40 minutes and a £15 train ticket. the guys a muppet driving to work anyway. It'll take him longer and with the current cost of parking and petrol the train is much cheaper and quicker anyway.

**fake edit.

Apart from that... if you can work from home, why bother going to the office in the first place.

Taken by Ins Co,
perhaps. Police would NOT be the least bit interested. The only reason they showed up at all was, because the fire service would
have called them.

Exactly right.

That's really part of the problem. People are too scared to tackle criminals because they know that they'll be arrested and charged whilst the criminals are allowed to roam free.

Police targets - set by the government - are to blame for that.

Also, Jack Straw refuses point blank to remove the 'reasonable force' clause from the law, which effectively means homeowners can do nothing to protect themselves because the second they touch a criminal they'll face court.

It's pathetic and will never change until we have new government.

Futures, Swindon says...

Actually the self defence provisions of the Criminal Justice and Immigration Act 2008 back homeowners etc (or so we're told!)

This new law states that as long as homeowners used no more force than is absolutely necessary people should be confident that the law will support them.

Personally I believe this to be more tosh from a failing Government. If you look, you'll see that all of the provisions already exist. Article 2 of the Human Rights Act says that a homeowner can use reasonable force to defend his/her property as long as they acted instinctively or were afraid of having injuries inflicted upon themselves.

Frontier(s), says...

Futures, your own description of the 'new' Act demonstrates it gives homeowners absolutely no more rights or protection than previously.

'No more force than is absolutely necessary' is an utter nonsense designed to protect criminals.

If somebody is in your house in the dead of night and about to attack your family then in my view killing them is absolutely no more force than necessary - but the law will never, ever view it that way.

You also mention that homeowners 'should' be confident that the law will support them. There must be no 'should' about it.

I'm afraid the 'new' Act announced by Jack Straw is just pointless posturing and means NOTHING.

The criminals still have the upper hand and the law on their side... and always will under Labour.
