ACCORDING to a national health poll, nearly eight per cent of people in Swindon are obese.

But Swindon Primary Care Trust’s information suggests this figure could be three times higher – matching the national average.

It was rated at 7.8 per cent in a national ‘fat map’ conducted by Dr Foster Research.

In comparison Wiltshire PCT was given a 6.9 per cent rating.

Swindon PCT refused to comment on the national ‘fat-map’ figures, until it could see how the company behind the research had reached its conclusions.

Jane Leaman, joint director of public health for Swindon PCT and Swindon Council, said: “Over the past year we have continued to tackle obesity by implementing and developing new services and programmes focused on both prevention and treatment.”

The results are based on information received from people registered with GPs as part of a Quality and Outcomes Framework (QOF) for 2006 to 2007.

Swindon does not come out near the top of this list with the Shetland Isles having 15.54 per cent obesity.

PCT figures show on entering reception class 9.8 per cent of children are classed as obese compared with 9.9 per cent in England overall.

Year six children in Swindon show an average of 17.3 per cent obesity, coming in below the national average of 17.5 per cent.

The PCT defended its support systems including breastfeeding support by midwives, healthy weaning advice by health visitors, the national healthy schools programme, general advice on healthy eating and physical activity by health professionals like school nurses as well as health visitors and practice nurses.

In addition exercise or weight loss programmes were available on referral.

The figures for Swindon were similar to Wiltshire.

A Wiltshire Primary Care Trust spokesman: “Obesity is a major public problem and we are absolutely committed to tackling it.

“We currently have a draft obesity strategy which will be published in due course.”

MEND, a scheme educating both children and parents about healthy eating and exercise, has also proved successful.

Dietician Deborah Collins said they were seeing more of the serious cases where patients’ BMI was above 35 and more patients were turning to surgery.

The Great Western Ambulance Trust confirmed it plans to introduce three super size ambulances in the near future.

And the Great Western Hospital has also had to buy extra equipment, such as beds and wheelchairs, to cope with larger patients.

You can take a Hoarse to water,
But you cant make It drink.
Most obese people live on junk food.
I would say they are too lazy to cook a healthy meal.In fact some
would not know what a cabbage/carrot
or Broccoli look like. And,YES,they are cheaper than a Big Mac + fries.

Only 8% i am staggered, look around the shopping malls, bring back local grocers (those were the days) unfortunately today you can buy cheap processed food which only adds to the waistline.Still by 2012 perhaps the figure will drop

Its way more than that.. Pop down to USA fried chicken or one of those other top notch eateries on a saturday and it resembles the corus line from the rolly pollys.

people who say they are happy to be fat are liars.either to themselves or the people they say it to.i'd bet all of them would want to be thinner if truth be known.

They obviously forgot to count the obese staff at GWH, that would boost the percentage. As I've said before they need to get their own house in order before preaching to others. Few of the GWH staff use the stairs, which the signs say is the healthy thing to do.

Never mind parks and upper stratton, you'll probably find more obese kids in your chavvy vale/scabby meads area where parents give kids money instead of packed lunch, give them money to go to town and get mc'ds etc and buy them all the latest gadgets that mean they are also inactive to cover up the guilt of being part time parents, theres not many cases around now where the mother has the luxury of staying at home baking, cleaning and laundry!!??

As for adults, walking through the town sometimes i would agree, and be surprised that it is only 8%

I don't think anyone is truely happy with the way they are regardless of size, I don't think being thinner will make me any happier than I am now, a new job now that would make me very happy. I am happy with who I am, I have a man who loves me for how I am and hates the fact that I'm losing weight (need to lose it so I can put it all back on over xmas) so I aint got anything to be unhappy about except the job as mentioned before

what, me worry?, swindon says...
11:28pm Fri 29 Aug 08

Thing is, when people are unhappy, with themselves, with life, with society, with their job et al, they tend to eat more........
I doubt there's many people that are truly happy these days....

It is said that a partner who objects to their other half losing weight is insecure. In their minds they believe the losing of weight will make 'you' more attractive to others, and may stray.

Walk through the centre of Swindon on any given day and you are confronted by a hideous mass of obesity, ignorance and ugliness, all making their way to the local pie shop (3 Greggs in town - that'll help nicely). Women who feel it is their god-given right to be as fat as possible and wear as little as possible, and men so large they look pregnant. Swindon apears to be overly-represented in the morbidly obese stakes and I for one can't bear to go into town on a Saturday to witness the atrocities that parade up and down the streets.

May I make a suggestion, save your money on weight lose ideas, and save even more by eating less, and walking 2 or 3 miles a day. The only sure fire way of losing weight and getting fit at the same time.

As for kids, send them out to play sport, not pig out in front of a Game Boy or such like. It is no coincidence that children use to be fitter and healthier, we never had such stay at home games, or for that matter junk food. I think the only fast food outlets were the chippy and the occasional Wimpy.
