African women set up support group

7:10pm Thursday 28th August 2008

AFRICAN women in Swindon can now count on the support of new friends.

Ellen Osa, originally from Liberia, is establishing a support group for immigrant women.

The group is holding a fun day tomorrow marking its official launch and everyone is welcome.

“We want to promote the health, well being and culture of African women,” said Ellen.

“I have come across a lot of women of African descent who feel isolated.

“We can talk to them and help them feel relaxed so they can settle into their second home.

“We are hoping to get as many members as possible.”

Training and education will also be part of the support group’s remit, but it needs to find premises.

At the moment existing members meet every month in Ellen’s hair salon – Sadia on Manchester Road.

Visitors to tomorrow’s fun day in the Broadgreen Community Centre will be treated to African drumming, a hairstyle fashion show and delicious food.

Ellen became inspired to launch the support network after meeting a number of teenage girls who were struggling at home.

She believes in women fulfilling their potential.

“I want to get all African women together and I think we can do a lot for the community.”

She says everyone is welcome from all nationalities.
