CHILDREN at Nyland Special School are in need of new governors.

Headteacher Paul Sunners is on a mission to find replacements after losing a number of long-serving governors due to family circumstances.

Governors from the local authority, community and parent bracket are all required at the Nythe-based school.

“We are hoping to find people who are willing to make a wholesome contribution without it being onerous,” said Mr Sunners.

“We are a nice primary school to be involved with and we are also a good school according to Ofsted. There is a lot of exciting and creative stuff going on here.

“We have a desperate shortage of governors and there are a number of vacancies available that have arisen due to current governors moving away from Swindon.”

The new governors will need to attend about 10 meetings per year, as part of their role in looking after the welfare of the school.

Its 46 pupils have complex emotional needs and associated learning difficulties, so Mr Sunners said the role would particularly suit anyone with an interest in special education.

“Every child’s needs are very important to us,” said Mr Sunners.

“We need grown-ups who have that interest and who want to be part of the fun and the journey the school is on towards improvements.”

Staff governor Ralph Lancaster-Gaye said: “It is a very rewarding role because you become involved with the school and the children.

“As a governor, you feel you are a very important part of the school community and you help staff and parents manage the children’s education.”
