Iron Age replica goes up in flames

A SUSPICIOUS fire has gutted the replica of a historic hut only two years after it was built.

The Iron Age Roundhouse, located just off of the Barbury Castle site, went up in flames on Monday night after residents say yobs finally succeeded in their efforts to destroy the structure.

It was a wonderful community resource that really brought the place alive. It just shows that the ill will of the people involved can spoil a site for thousands of people

People living nearby, who refused to be named, said they heard cars speeding from the site soon before the fire brigade arrived just after 10pm.

Fire crews from Swindon and Stratton, who arrived at the site at 10.20pm, put out the fire.

But they were unable to save the building, which was made from straw and wood.

John Antoni, the owner of the neighbouring Barbury Castle Cafe, said the incident will hurt the castle site and his business.

He said: “We do have an issue of boy racers in the car park in the evenings, and have had police attend on a number of occasions.

“Let’s just say I am not that surprised that it has been burned down.

“The building was of historical value and was open to everyone.

“It used to show people how their forefathers used to live in days gone by, but now it is gone.”

Chris Park of Acorn Education, who designed and built the hut, said: “It was a wonderful community resource that really brought the place alive. It just shows that the ill will of the people involved can spoil a site for thousands of people.”

The building was constructed in 2006 after the National Lottery granted the project £28,000.

The hut was a scale replica of what a building would have looked like in the Iron Age – the sixth and eighth centuries BC.

Volunteers who helped to create the structure used local materials, including wood from Savernake Forest, thatch from Marlborough and mud from the site.

The site was open to visitors and also hosted events including those organised as part of the Swindon Literature Festival.

Swindon Fire Station Commander Pete Townsend said he thought the blaze was started deliberately and said he wants to bring those responsible to justice.

He urged anyone with information to call the station on 01793 401226.

I just think its a pity that whoever did this was not caught in the fire themselves. Something must be done to stop the idiots with their little motor cars with stupidly noisy exhausts (because its sooooo cool) from accessing the site.

Totally agree Merlins Pants - put some sort of gate up at night so cars cant get into the car park. Failing that, round up these immature pathetic individuals, throw them in a barn and set fire to it. They wouldnt find it so amusing then. Idiots.

Hmmm...leave the gate open and have real police near by. Then let the dustbin exhaust gang in, close the gates and round-em up.

Find them and get the money back to re-build it.

Sell off their stupid cars and their stupid bling and anything else you need to until the £28,000 has been raised.

Then make them do the actual work. And they can't leave the site until it is done correctly.

Then send them to prison for two years.

Such a shame that this educational resource has been lost because a group of selfish morons could find nothing more constructive to do with their time. The problem is even if the were caught they won't be made to suffer anyway.

While I agree entirely with the sentiments above, we basically ask for this type of behaviour because we seem to just accept that the government refuse to adequately punish these types of criminals.

Judges, via their pathetically lenient sentences, send a clear message to all criminals that they can do as they please. Criminals are clearly shown that the consequences of their actions will be pointless ASBOs (that they then break) or 'community' sentences that they don't bother doing.

Until we *demand* that our judges start dealing with criminals appropriately we are all to blame for what has happened in terrible instances such as this.

The 'Softly, softly, send them on a safari to Africa' approach has not worked - not only that, it's made things far worse.

Time for a sensible approach: make sure these criminals know they'll be caught. Make sure they know the sentence will be harsh. Make sure they know the prison they're sent to will not be a glorified holiday camp. Introduce a doubling of sentences for repeat offenders and a three-strike rule.

We'd see crime plummet within months (if only because the majority of the little bastards involved in it would be behind bars!)
