THERE are very few people in Wiltshire who can say they have regularly appeared on prime time television, let alone played football for England at Wembley.

But one player who turns out in the first division of the Wiltshire League every Saturday can lay claim to both of those boasts, as well as captaining his country in the process.

And, if spectators at KC FC’s fixtures are rubbing their eyes thinking they recognise the team’s centre-midfielder, they should do, for it is none other than TV presenter, actor, musician and Robbie Williams’s best mate Jonathan Wilkes.

The 30-year-old scored the winner to steer an England team, including legends Teddy Sheringham and Jamie Redknapp, to a 4-3 win over a Rest Of The World XI in September as part of Soccer Aid – a concept which Wilkes created with pal Williams.

And the midfield dynamo told the Advertiser it was a boyhood dream to play on Wembley’s hallowed turf, admitting: “It’s amazing and such an honour.

“You’re stood in the tunnel waiting to go out, look behind you and realise that you’re about to lead out guys like Alan Shearer and David Seaman, and Wembley is just the most amazing stadium.

“It’s every boy’s dream to play for their country at Wembley, and to captain England as well, and then to go and score the winner – well that just tops it all.

“As captain I didn’t really need to give a team talk. Some of the ex-pros said a bit and Harry (Redknapp, England’s manager) gave a really good speech.

“It’s amazing because they are all so determined to win, even though it’s really only a friendly.

“But no one takes it like that and that’s the beauty of Soccer Aid.

“We’ve raised millions since it started. It’s such a simple concept but one that everyone enjoys.

“You’ve got old legends, pop stars, celebrities and they’re all playing football – it’s perfect.”

Just seven days after appearing in Soccer Aid, Wilkes was back in action for KC FC in their 1-1 draw against Castle Combe.

You would think it would be back down to earth with a bump for the star but, having moved to the area just over 12 months ago, he relishes playing with his mates on a Saturday as much as he does going toe-to-toe with celebrities and legends.

“I just love playing football,” said Wilkes. “Me and my wife moved to Wootton Bassett about a year ago and my brother-in-law is the captain of KC FC.

“He introduced me to a few of the lads and it went from there.

“We’ve got a decent side here and are having a pretty good season. I can’t play every week because of my other commitments, but I play whenever I’m available.

“It’s a great laugh and that’s the most important thing.

“We play to win, but we have a lot of fun in the process as well.”
