Tesco on the turbine trail

Tesco on the turbine trail Tesco on the turbine trail

A SWINDON supermarket wants to prove it is not full of hot air when it comes to the environment by putting up three 10m tall wind turbines.

The Tesco store in Ocotal Way has applied to the council for planning permission to put up the turbines, which are expected to generate enough power to supply the needs of 12 houses.

But some residents are sceptical.

Martyn Dickinson who lives near the store said: “They have had cranes down there all week, which is probably to do with this.

“The whole thing sounds like a clever marketing stunt to me.

“This is just how they operate and no one is big enough to take them on.

“Because they are making it green, people can’t say anything against it without looking anti the environment. But what is going to happen to the power they produce?

“It is all going to go back into running their lights and tills for free, making them more profit.

“They fly the green flag when it suits them, and everybody goes along with it.

“But they have lorries going up and down the service road outside my house all day and night.

“My children get woken up by the lorries every single night.

“Tesco is all about profit over people.”

Tesco spokeswoman Melanie Chisholm said: “This is part of our commitment to reducing the carbon footprint of our existing stores by 50 per cent by 2010.

“We have reviewed our existing stores and distribution centres to find suitable sites.

“The wind turbines are second generation vertical turbines, different from the three bladed ones.

“They are similar in height to a lamp post, fitting in well with the surroundings and very quiet.

“Each turbine generates 6KW, enough to power four households, and reduce carbon emmisions by 24 tonnes a year.

“What proportion of the Swindon store’s power could be generated by the turbines would depend on the size of the store.”

The turbines are being rolled out at several Tescos stores across the country.

The supermarket confirmed that extensive tests had been carried out to make sure the built up central Swindon site was windy enough to generate green-power.

The turbines will be positioned within the supermarket car park in the best position to catch prevailing winds.

They will be located 10.6m, the same distance as the height of the turbines, away from the road and buildings.

They will also be at least 50m away from the nearest homes.

Wherever possible they will be kept away from mature trees, that could have a “wind shading” effect stopping the turbines from working at their maximum capacity.

Tell me what you think
Derique Montaut said he would wait to hear the views of residents living near the supermarket before deciding where he stands on the issue of wind turbines.

Coun Montaut (Lab/Central) said: “I was aware of the planning application, but I haven’t had any representations by local residents on this matter.

“My response to the council will be dependent on the reactions of local residents.

“In terms of environmental issues, I think wind turbines are the direction we need to go into. But the environment and quality of life for people who visit the area, and residents of the area, is very important.

“At this stage I’ll have to wait and see how people feel.”

What I think is that Tesco fails to adher to requests rather than their own requests. Time and time again, we Blue Badge holders are suffering through mis use of parking bays. Turbines should be bottom of the list. Customers come first rather than Tesco snobs.

Taffy, your arguments are completely irrelevant. This idea is a good one, and should be supported. 50% reduction in their carbon footprint by 2010 is an admirable target, and I fully support the installation of the turbines to help Tesco do this.

The emphasis seems to be on individual households to reduce their dependence on fossil fuels to help combat climate change and improve our environment, but large profit-making institutions need to be at the forefront of this. it is Mr Montaut's responsibility as a representative of us Swindonians to ensure that we all, residents and businesses, honour our collective responsibility to reverse the effects of climate change.

There are two issues here.

1. Why are Tesco doing it. ? Clearly to reduce their long term costs, and they believe their carbon foot print.

2. Will it benefit residents locally.? Not likely in my view. 18KW of power would be unlikely to satisfy their own needs. This translates to 75 amps which is what I use at peak times.

The fact remains as fuel costs rise any method of reducing individual bills is a good idea. Unfortunately as always Councillor Montaut knows little of what he speaks. Wind turbines as a global solution to energy needs is a non starter.

To provide the output of just one coal fired power station would require 20,000 turbines, and even then would not make the power stations obsolete as wind power is only 70% efficient. Germany has not been able to close one single power station despite 10's of thousands of turbines.

Which is why the only solution to our energy needs going forward is Nuclear, but they must be built now. Sadly we've just sold the leading experts on these to the French.

Well i for one would be terribly upset if an area of outstanding natural beauty, such as tesco ocotal way was infringed in any way with unsightly turbines. When is someone going to think of the children?

Tescos can borrow the cubs to produce their energy for them. We will set up a hamster wheel. Wear the little monkeys out and give me a break :D

Dont see the problem with this - get it done.

If most supermarkets could become independantly powered in the future it seems like common sense to me, reduces costs and saves energy. Seems like a win - win situation to me.

To the person complaining about Tescos only caring about its profits - so what? they are a business and are very good at making money. Their success has created a lot of jobs both nationally and locally.

Can't see a problem - good luck to Tesco. I've been a member of Greenpeace and Friends of the Earth for over 20 years and we welcome moves to reduce energy use away from nuclear power and burning fossil fuels. Let's hope Tesco start to reduce energy use too.

Sounds like an excellent idea, it's also good that these are second generation vertical type and not the usual three bladed ones. This means there's no way Bob will get his stove-pipe hat knocked off if he walks underneath one.

Now, that was a funny post.

Of course, the next stage by Tesco, when they have the turbines up and running, will be to build a small nuclear facility in a corner of the car park. That will bring the protestors out in force and possibly another petition.

It's a shame Tesco dosen't think as much of it's suppliers as it does saving the planet. They have now decided to pay in 60 days instead of 30 days. Still "every little helps" I suppose.

Methinks some poor soul at Tescos has got it into their heads that Swindon is a "green" town.
Just because a couple of Swampy lovers put up an occasional post does not mean we are all reverting back to the stone age.
Publicity stunt springs to mind!

As far as I can tell the turbine will be on their Ocotal Way site, no disrespect but it's hardly an area of outstanding natural beauty.

Hey result! and this could lead to to harnessing the power of the overflow from the lake with a hydro electric scheme -from memory the flow should be enough to power one Toc H lamp!

Bob, for someone who chooses to put himself in the firing line with their 'political' leanings as you do, you seem to be particularly sensitive to comments about your choice of headwear.

As an aside, I know your son James very well. I haven't seen him for years though, and would like to say hello. Lord knows how I can give you my number for him to give me a call, but if we can find a way in which it's possible without the World knowing my personal details, I would very much appreciate your passing it on. Thanks Bob.

I loathe these 3 bladed turbines. They are a blot on the landscape. These 2nd generation at least don't look so bad although I think Tesco's is pulling a publicity stunt. Don't forget we're coming up for Christmas and they'll be wanting to attract as many people to their store as possible so I think they're playing the green card for their own gain.

What is a pity that no-one has yet invented a way of harnessing lightning. One bolt of lightning could probably keep Swindon going in electricity for at least a year.

Institutions are comprised of people - people who are collectively and individually responsible for the actions of an institution, people who can also take grievance against remarks against the institution, so you distinction is meaningless.

You may not have named a name in tesco's employees for convienience, but somebody or some people in tesco decided on this policy, so when you talk about the companies policy you talk about them too.

amlorusso, I can always rely on you to post something that has absolutely nothing to do with any previous comments. Firstly I have no idea what you are referring to, but I am sure we with 'trawl' until you find a comment containing 'pervert/s' which is an expression that I use to describe, err 'perverts', 'a person who practises sexual perversion'.

Pray tell what comments have I made about Tesco staff? Perhaps posting at 4.13 am you just got up, or just got in.

Funky, that's the point it is not my choice of head wear, and if you followed these threads you would understand the point I made.

As for James I am more than happy to pass on your details you simply have to send them to my pub, which given you know James I am sure you will know. That said James has moved on from his time in this part of the world.

malkym1, dc the 2nd - you do realise it can be very difficult on the web to determine if someone is being sarcastic or not? Particularly with sites like this giving feedback on news where some people may have very extreme views.

That's why people have been using emoticons for over 10 years.

Bob,

1. I was posting in response to your criticism of someone else about off-topic posting. So you bought the matter up first, so don't complain if someone responds to that.

2. I have contributed to the discussion as well.

3. In this thread you criticised someone of making a personal attack and not a comment about the subject matter. You've done the same thing. There was a discussion about prostitution where everybody was talking about the subject, and when you didn't like what people where saying you called them perverts.

4. What does the time I post got to do with anything?

5. You like to think you are above personal reamrks and just talking about the subject, but you've demonstrated repeatedly that your not, and especially in the case I highlighted, an unprovoked attack on people's character where everyone else talked about the subject until you didn't like it.
