BRIGHT fairy bulbs and dazzling fireworks lit up Wharf Green as Swindon’s favourite hunk Chris Fountain switched on the Christmas lights.

Snow machines fired out white foam flakes last night as youngsters got into the festive spirit.

More than 10,000 people turned out to watch the big switch-on in the town centre as Swindon celebrated the first Christmas after many significant steps in its regeneration plan.

Hollyoaks star Chris, 21, who plays as Justin Burton in the hit Channel 4 soap and who came second to Suzanne Shaw in ITV’s Dancing on Ice, said it was an honour to be given duty of the lights countdown.

“It’s great to be in Swindon,” he said. “I don’t know the place that well but I was here for a football game against a GWR team for charity a while back.

“I really like Christmas. I’ve got quite a small close-knit family and we usually go round to grandma’s for Christmas dinner. She cooks chicken and turkey – it’s awesome.

“We even dress our dog up, who is a British Bull Terrier called Snoop, with Rudolph’s antlers.

“I’d like to wish everyone in Swindon a merry Christmas and a happy new year.”

GWR radio presenters Jez and Roo entertained the crowds and people enjoyed the fun fair.

One parent and child who had a great time was Simon Daily, 37, and his son Thomas, six, from north Swindon.

“I’ve had a good time and I like the lights because they sparkle lots and I like the snow because it’s fun,” said Thomas.

Snowflakes and candle lights illuminated Whalf Green, while other magical lights could also be see in Commercial Road and Havelock Street.

“This has really put Christmas on the map in Swindon,” said Swindon Mayor Steve Wakefield.

While Mark Ross, inSwindon chief executive, who helped organise the event, said: “It’s been a great switch-on – brilliant.

“I’m glad to see so many people have come out to be a part of it.

“It’s the first time we’ve held it in Wharf Green and I’m sure it will continue here for many years to come.”

Swindon council leader Rod Bluh said: “The atmosphere is fantastic. It’s pleasing to see so many people enjoying themselves. Wharf Green is a great space and it’s being used for what it’s meant for. It’s all part of the regenerational journey.”

Town crier Fred Ferris added: “This is my 12th Christmas lights switch-on and the best yet.”
