No, not the fruit, but the suite of Apple Mac computers creating waves throughout Dorcan Technology College.

Along with the launch of the Media Diploma in September, Dorcan is becoming a media – savvy school, creating videos and radio shows that would rival professional broadcasters. Powerful Apple Macs are being used to their fullest, allowing pupils at the school to really get creative.

The exciting new Media Diploma has allowed children and staff alike to participate in activities they would not normally do inside a classroom. Activities range from interviewing professionals from the media industry, to creating their own radio shows. Sam Hackett a Year 10 diploma student says, ‘It is challenging but I am really excited to continue it’.

Luke Newton, 14 thinks; ‘The diploma is challenging but very enjoyable. So far the best bit has been getting really stuck into the radio show’. Ruth Farrow, lead media teacher at the school says ‘As a teacher I think the diploma offers freedom of movement – the pupils can work independently or as a group and choose how they express what they learn. For example, they could create a radio show or even make a magazine, it’s up to them. The possibilities are unlimited!

As one of the first schools in the town to take on the Media Diploma, Dorcan is looking forward to the future. Keep looking at the Student Adver for updates on our growing success story.
