University’s big plans for coate (From Swindon Advertiser)

Some very sensible comments have been stated here. We shall have to wait and see about the position of UWE and how far they have been coerced into their present position, if it is as stated by SGP.

I must say that the 'Swindon Gateway Partnership' sounds all official when in reality it is just a couple of greedy developers who have little or no concern about what happens to Swindon.

At the moment it's (Clares Site) to small but when you add in the size of the oasis site, which let's be honest is way past it's use by date, would make more sense when you consider it's right next to the railway station. These things don't happen overnight and there would be time to find a new site for an Oasis type community sports complex that just might include STFC perhaps? And the link centre is close to becoming another Oasis, Coate water would be spoilt for ever if we allow ANY development in the area. Once the front garden is built on and even in the current climate i would imagine that by 2015 it would be, there would be very little green space between Swindon and the M4, in fact i can draw a direct parallel with Reading and what a hole that place is, next stop Slough, an even bigger dump. The final decision will lie with the government god help us.

I live in the middle of Park South and so the only place where I can enjoy the country, in walking distance, is Coate Water.

That's fine so as I have said let's build it by Wanborough, you are obviously all for more building on green fields. I cannot see what use the fields around wanborough are being out to so lets build the university on them.
I note that you haven't commented on this suggestion just said it's okay to build on Coate.

My apologies.... For the volume of traffic that the new university will create I would have thought that the green brigade would be up in arms over a new road to go with what developments are already planned.
Coate is clearly more accessible than Wanborough.

The 'perfect place' for this 'University' would be North Star. It's central and near to both the railway and bus station AND the college.
Otherwise the only difference between Coate or Wanborough being chosen is that there is already infrastructure (Roads etc.) on the Wanborough site. I think TKD4ever has a point.

Sorry... too small... already too congested... and unlikely that a proper university would want to come to Swindon to be plonked in the middle of that dump!
If this town wants to move forward we need a decent university and the only viable place to put it is at Coate.

As long as they keep Redlands they can build as much as they like around, in or on Wanborough. (you shouldn't always believe what you read), I've said it before and I'll say it again -we live on an overcrowded small island, we have an expanding aged population -more people are living into their eighties than ever before - that means houses have to built somewhere - Coate, Wanborough,Front Garden - flood plains, newt ponds -anywhere! And! nobody has a divine right to live for evermore overlooking a panoramic vista of greenery and countryside - so bring on the university - Swindon is an urban area - Coate is within that area and let's face it is an eyesore -tatty sandpit and paddling pool, smelly lake, "a poor imitation of Ivor the Engine", a 20 metre duck, pigeon and bird roosting platform sticking out of the water - and still idiots jump off the top of it! - no its time to fill the lake in and build the campus and housing in its place!

Also, if taking long country walks is your thing then move to the country. It wasn't so long ago that the vast majority of Swindonians wanted to achieve city status!

TKD - Redlands is special - apparently so I'm told you can hear the gentle buzz of the microlite engine on a calm summers day, or the gentle swish of a parachute as it glides in over the neighbours houses - not that I'd know of course!

How typically Swindon? "Why do we have to have a university anyway?" Having a university might actually make some of the youngsters ofr this town have aspirations to achieve something more than become Chavs, get pregnant at 14 or want to become a celebrity which seems to be the norm for a few of them if the Adver is anything to go by.

I'm not sure about it going at Coate but we really do need a Uni in this town.

PeeveD, just wondered why you consider North Star a dump? Do you live, work or travel through that area at all?? As i do work there i'm afraid that i don't see what you obviously do. The only area that is an eyesore is the Oasis, this needs replacing, perhaps with a University!

When Sainsburys opens a new store in a new town they don't ask Tesco to oversee it,why can't Swindon have a stand alone University, this would then remove any coniving, back handed deals. Being 'Made in Swindon' could unify a lot of doubters, the tail is wagging the dog at present. What is so difficult in hiring the correct personnel to start with, the University will need to be staffed when open anyway.

Coate is a perfect place for the student place of learning, and a perfect place for fairly close - i.e. walking distance to town - access to facilities. It's only the 'posh' people in Lawn and Marlborough road that don't like it. They consider Coate their space, and bugger anyone else who comes close. And besides, it might affect their house prices! (Which is the major reason) Selfish, prudish and arrogant behaviour.

The rundown Oasis. The grafiti. The old college building that looks like a bomb site. The ugly massive advertising hoardings. The bumper to bumper traffice jams every morning and evening.

Anyhoo.... back to the original article.... Where the devil are the " we don't believe ther is a Uni interested in Swindon " brigade.
It would appear that it's all gone quiet over there!!

I'm a 3rd year student social worker at the University of Bath, Swindon Campus, and I've read many articles over the past couple of years about 'Universities coming to Swindon' but this is the first time I've replied because I'm sick of all the throw away comments such as the one quoted above.
In June this year, 8 local students qualified from the University of Bath, Swindon campus and walked straight into jobs as desperately needed social workers right here in town. There was no fanfare in Swindon, nothing in the Adver. Don't you think this is something Swindon should be proud of? I certainly do!
In June 2009, there will be another 14 of us to qualify, hopefully including myself and in 2010, last years final intake of 14 students will also qualify before you say goodbye to the University of Bath for good.
What about all the student teachers that trained at the SCITT department at Bath's Oakfield campus before it closed? We should be proud of them too.
I'll tell you why I wanted to go to a University in Swindon, because I live in Swindon and have a family to look after too - dont forget students can be mature like me and not 20 yrs old!
I couldn't go anywhere else as travelling daily to Gloucester or Bristol for example would be too much besides family to look after, lectures and study time.
When I applied for the course, 105 people applied for just 15 places so there is a huge demand for the Social Work course alone.
Bath wanted to build at Coate because they wanted to create a low-rise, pleasant,peaceful environment in which students could learn. What's wrong with that?
If UWE went to North Star as Ann Snelgrove wants, just who is the university meant to serve? The students who need a peaceful environment in which to study, or the financial prosperity of the shops/bars/pubs/club

As for a university just for the people of Swindon, that's tosh too - universities have to attract international students, as that is where the money is. UK undergraduates currently pay £3,045 per annum, international students pay £9,000 for the same course.
Potential undergraduates are also attracted to a university for it's standing in the league tables, so you are bound to attract people from outside of Swindon if the Uni is in the top 5 in the country for it's Social Work programme for example. So you can't have a university 'just for the people of Swindon'.
Swindon definitely needs a university. I was at college on the Access course with many intelligent single mums and dads who wanted to better their lives and that of their kids. Some went into nursing in Swindon, some wanted to go to university but couldn't because of logistics with kids at school not tying in with uni lectures. At least the Social Work course I signed up for was designed around the students being parents. Shame it ends in 2010.
The fact that there is no university in Swindon is stopping people like single parents from wanting to improve their lives because they can't afford to move or travel daily to other universities.

Next to Coate is just the perfect place for students to study - as long as the developers don't try and cut down the area of the campus setting so they could build more houses to sell instead like was rumoured to have happened with the University of Bath, or UWE could pull out too. That would be disastrous for the people of Swindon, not by putting a campus at Coate as Ann Snelgrove states.

No wonder PeeveD is over the moon about this, hey MB? You are one step closer to building that house you are after that will look over Coate Water.

Has anyone actually viewed the plans? As someone who has the site at Coate borders directly onto Coate Water and is then surrounded by housing. A uni can work in a country location, Lancaster for example, however, Lancaster works because it is its own village on the hill separated from the city. The UWE institution will not be a undergraduate, large-scale uni as UWE already has one in Bristol. It will be a post-graduate centre that offers a selection of undergraduate courses. The logic of putting the uni in the town centre is to compliment the new town centre regeneration. The North Star sight borders the regeneration area and the investment that would accompany a uni site would improve the surrounding area. Coate is a much-loved green space that should be preserved. A uni is vital for Swindon but a town centre location will serve both students and the local community better.

This is not a case for a uni campus at Coate or town centre. UWE would have to commit itself to providing facilities at both locations to meet the policy requirement of the Swindon Local Plan.

In a letter to me dated 27 April 2007, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor UWE (John Rushforth) said:

“If we were to develop proposals for a university site at Swindon, we would only do so after a detailed feasibility study which considered a range of options and looked at all the costs and benefits. If we were to be involved in such a feasibility exercise that included consideration of Coate, I would be happy to give you the opportunity to provide any evidence that you felt would be helpful. ”

I have asked again when we might meet to discuss our concerns and to see a copy of the feasibility study. So far, there has been no response. Hence by comment to the Swindon Advertiser.

Mivvy - the debate is not about the benefits of a Swindon University and it is tragic that the Oakfield Campus is no longer being used for tertiary education.

You obviously didn't look at the planning application unless you believe that campus buildings up to 5 storeys high (next to a nature reserve)qualify as low-rise.

Build it at Coate -fill in the lake -and while they're at it build a tarmac airfiled so the light aircraft and microlites can take off and buzz the Lawns, Marlborough Rd & the Parks - there might also be room for a few Honda cars too!

I find the level of selfishness from some posters on this site astounding.
It is widely regarded that the only REALLY viable site for the new uni is the Coate site.
Just because a few out of towners and Lawn residents decide to kick up a fuss should not detract from the fact that this town needs to move forward!
We live in a town that most people would like to see upgraded to a city.
The coate area is a part of this town and a therefore a resource that should be developed.
My only hope is that the building work begins sooner rather than later!

I would ask Mr PeeveD how it is that he can say:

Really? Who has told him that? And for what reasons does he believe that this statement is true?
I would be interested to know.
