A BRISTOL university wants to build at Coate.
After months of speculation it emerged yesterday that the University of the West of England (UWE) is interested in building on land next door to Coate Water.
Swindon Gateway Partnership (SGP) announced at a meeting yesterday that it has an agreement with UWE to build a campus on the Coate beauty spot, also known as Commonhead.
A UWE spokesman confirmed it was in talks with the partnership about the site but denied any decision had been made.
Council leader Rod Bluh said that Swindon Council was opposed to the present plan for Coate and is committed to proving to UWE that a town centre location would be preferable.
Jean Saunders, of Swindon Friends of the Earth, said: “It is very sad that we have heard nothing before this meeting and that changes have been made to the planning application at the last minute.
“We have been given very little information and I would like to see a feasibility study from UWE setting out what they wish to do at Coate and what differences there would be with the original Bath proposal.”
South Swindon MP Anne Snelgrove, said the announcement was “very foolish”.
She said: “I will be seeking an immediate meeting with UWE about this and I will be setting my opposition to this idea.
“The original planning permission that was granted by the council left the door open, which is very unfortunate.
“But I will be working with the council to convince UWE that this is not in its best interests and that the SGP cannot provide what UWE needs.
“If the university is determined to follow this path it will be opposed by both the town’s MPs, the whole of the council and people of Swindon.
“But I am keen to hear from UWE and know what its position is because this seems to me like an attempt by the developers to bounce UWE into associating with this application.”
Mr Bluh said: “We have publicly stated that our preference is for a university to be sited in the town centre and we have worked very hard to deliver a suitable site, which included a substantial financial commitment from the council.
“Ultimately the direction that UWE choose to take is down to them.
“Given the length of time it will take for any decisions about development at Commonhead to be made the council still has the opportunity to explore the potential of other locations, which it will do so vigorously and present options to UWE.
“Our position on development at Commonhead remains unchanged.
“We will only accept development there if the planning application is of the highest standard and offers the maximum possible protection to Coate Water.”

Welcome welcome UWE. Coate woould be an ideal place to build... close to the M4... plenty of new affordable housing to go with the new campus... Cheaper land... Much better than clogging up more of the town centre with overpriced accomadation and snarled up traffic. Ignore the newt lovers and tree huggers and BUILD BUILD BUILD!!!

These things don't happen overnight and there would be time to find a new site for an Oasis type community sports complex that just might include STFC perhaps? And the link centre is close to becoming another Oasis, Coate water would be spoilt for ever if we allow ANY development in the area. Once the front garden is built on and even in the current climate i would imagine that by 2015 it would be, there would be very little green space between Swindon and the M4, in fact i can draw a direct parallel with Reading and what a hole that place is, next stop Slough, an even bigger dump. The final decision will lie with the government god help us.
"South Swindon MP Anne Snelgrove, said the announcement was “very foolish”.

UWE should tell Snelgrove to get stuffed - or words to that effect.
"Council leader Rod Bluh said that Swindon Council was opposed to the present plan for Coate and is committed to proving to UWE that a town centre location would be preferable."
Bluh should be told where to go as well if he knows what's good for his political future. I cannot believe he supports a site at North Star that is far too small.
Has no-one else in this town ever been to universtity and seen the requirements of a modern universtity campus?

The 'perfect place' for this 'University' would be North Star. It's central and near to both the railway and bus station AND the college. Otherwise the only difference between Coate or Wanborough being chosen is that there is already infrastructure (Roads etc.) on the Wanborough site. I think TKD4ever has a point.

The real reason behind the desperation of the developers to get the Coate site will be money, purely and simply. When they've greased enough palms and handed out a few cheap cigars to those 'who count' they'll be given planning permission and **** the rest of us. They'll trouser the cash and be off.
It's interesting that the posters who seem to be in favour of the Coate development show what they really think of Swindon in their posts: It's a 'dump', it's 'tatty', an 'eyesore', it's 'smelly'.
Why do they want to build more of it?

Microlite, so what's so special about Redlands. Also why do we have to have a university anyway, most people who leave cannot get a job anyway. Also for those who want a university, you can go to Oxford, Cambridge or a host of others who in their right mind who apply to The University of Swindon, even if it's not actually called that because whatever you call it everyone will know it as the one in Swindon.

I'm a 3rd year student social worker at the University of Bath, Swindon Campus, and I've read many articles over the past couple of years about 'Universities coming to Swindon' but this is the first time I've replied because I'm sick of all the throw away comments such as the one quoted above. In June this year, 8 local students qualified from the University of Bath, Swindon campus and walked straight into jobs as desperately needed social workers right here in town. There was no fanfare in Swindon, nothing in the Adver. Don't you think this is something Swindon should be proud of? I certainly do! In June 2009, there will be another 14 of us to qualify, hopefully including myself and in 2010, last years final intake of 14 students will also qualify before you say goodbye to the University of Bath for good. What about all the student teachers that trained at the SCITT department at Bath's Oakfield campus before it closed? We should be proud of them too. I'll tell you why I wanted to go to a University in Swindon, because I live in Swindon and have a family to look after too - dont forget students can be mature like me and not 20 yrs old! I couldn't go anywhere else as travelling daily to Gloucester or Bristol for example would be too much besides family to look after, lectures and study time. When I applied for the course, 105 people applied for just 15 places so there is a huge demand for the Social Work course alone. Bath wanted to build at Coate because they wanted to create a low-rise, pleasant, peaceful environment in which students could learn. What's wrong with that? If UWE went to North Star as Ann Snelgrove wants, just who is the university meant to serve? The students who need a peaceful environment in which to study, or the financial prosperity of the shops/bars/pubs/club s at the bottom end of town? As for a university just for the people of Swindon, that's tosh too - universities have to attract international students, as that is where the money is. UK undergraduates currently pay £3,045 per annum, international students pay £9,000 for the same course. Potential undergraduates are also attracted to a university for it's standing in the league tables, so you are bound to attract people from outside of Swindon if the Uni is in the top 5 in the country for it's Social Work programme for example. So you can't have a university 'just for the people of Swindon'. Swindon definitely needs a university. I was at college on the Access course with many intelligent single mums and dads who wanted to better their lives and that of their kids. Some went into nursing in Swindon, some wanted to go to university but couldn't because of logistics with kids at school not tying in with uni lectures. At least the Social Work course I signed up for was designed around the students being parents. Shame it ends in 2010. The fact that there is no university in Swindon is stopping people like single parents from wanting to improve their lives because they can't afford to move or travel daily to other universities. Next to Coate is just the perfect place for students to study - as long as the developers don't try and cut down the area of the campus setting so they could build more houses to sell instead like was rumoured to have happened with the University of Bath, or UWE could pull out too. That would be disastrous for the people of Swindon, not by putting a campus at Coate as Ann Snelgrove states.
