Wharf Green development unlocks cash

TRANSFORMING Wharf Green has earned Swindon Council millions of pounds of extra Government funding.

Government growth point funding is dished out to towns experiencing rapid growth and goes towards developing infrastructure – such as schools, roads and doctors’ surgeries.

In the latest round of funding, Swindon Council had been expecting around £6.9m – but Government has instead earmarked the town for more than £9.9m. It is expected that some of the cash will go on improving public spaces in the town centre.

Councillor Phil Young, cabinet member for economic development, said: “This is a vote of confidence in Swindon by the Government.

“We have proven we can deliver. We delivered Wharf Green on time and proved that we can spend money wisely.

“What we want to do is create an economy that will sustain employment for the people that will move into the new homes being created around Swindon.

“Whilst we would argue that we need more funding for infrastructure this is certainly a step in the right direction.

“And we welcome any additional investment that comes into Swindon – be it from Government or private companies.”

Housing Minister Margaret Beckett said: “This money is targeted at those local authorities with the most ambitious growth plans “As well as helping to build the new homes we need, it will ensure we have the support and infrastructure in place so that these homes become part of the existing community, not a burden on their resources.”

Councillor Young said: “We want to make the town centre really work for people.

“So we are looking to spend this money in the town centre and its surrounds.

“Potentially that could mean a bridge over the railway line to join up the two sides of the town centre.

“Or it could be investment in the public realm, such as on Canal Walk, and areas like that, which separate the town.

“But this is for infrastructure – not just roads that go into areas where homes will be built, but in projects that will support the town centre development.”

Good to hear the government finally giving back some of our cash to Swindon - although I doubt £3m additional money will make much of a dent in anything.

Also very pleased to hear the council intend to use it to improve infrastructure in the town centre, rather than waste it building more new homes that nobody will buy.

Excellent news and testament to the fact that things HAVE been improving.

Very true. I am personally concerned by the huge numbers of flats that have been built and are being built round the town.

Surely there are enough now. Everywhere you look, more are being crammed in. It is about time the planning people started turning applications down on the reasonable basis that there are already too many

I think this has more to do with securing too Labour MP's. Would the voters of Swindon fall for such a blatant bride. ?

I hope they can spend a fraction of it on actually maintaining the wharf Green area. Has anyone noticed how overgrown with weeds the 'flower' (or to be more precise tree) beds area? I was embarrased when showing it to a visitor to Swindon the other day and honestly expected to see some needles or other horrible substances!!

Bob, I thought you might chime in with this one but could you please explain what you are trying to say:

Do you mean that there is 'too' much Labour, interpreted to mean there are 'too many Labour MPs'

or do you mean 'two' Labour MPs, meaning, well, there are two of them?

As for the second part.. has someone got married in the council chambers?

For goodness sake Bob put more water in it.

Or at least some ice!

Methinks Bob has been at the Croft Original a bit too often -either that or he's been testing the Noel ale a bit too enthusiastically!

Shame Bob.
Valid point lost in translation.
Just say no to the egg nog.

And no.... I WILL not believe for one second that anyone would be daft enough to fall for their clap trap!

Nah, this additional £3m is a drop in the ocean. Once the council have paid for the necessary Health & Safety risk assessments so that workers can go and pick the weeds from Wharf Green there won't be much left over to improve anything.

And I also don't think anyone would be stupid enough to vote for Snelgrove and Wills just because of this meagre handout.

£3m might sound a lot on the face of it, but in terms of enhancing a large town's infrastructure it's virtually meaningless.

Put it this way, you're not going to suddenly walk into town and gasp at how amazing it's become overnight.

This is good news Bob, but yet again you have managed to come up with something negative to say about it or the people involved in it.

That about sums up YOUR contribution to most of the stories on this site.

I didn't suggest it was good news to receive money from HMG, the motive for them doing so should be of concern to everyone. It is rumoured that there will be an election shortly after another give away budget in March. The danger is that people will fall for the cheap trick of promising cash.

If HMG actually hand over the money now, then we know they are serious, if they don't we know it is an empty promise like so many they have already gone back on.

Wharf Green is a dive. It's becoming more like a cheap fairground every time I walk through it. Crappy fairground rides, half eaten Macdonalds and dossers trying to sell me knocked off cds.

Which is far more than your contributions ever are!

Try saying something original for a change - I know it might be painful, but have a go.

Original you say Grumpy - I'll be looking out for some original gems from you now then. That will make a pleasant change.

Good, because at the moment you only ever seem to read what Bob's written and then make your usual snide comments.

AG, I welcome your support, but you are really wasting your time with CO, whoever he/she is they clearly have a personal axe to grind and rather than have the courage to contact me personally, after all everyone knows where I am, he chooses to attempt to deride me here.

It brings to mind when I was a policeman, I received a phone call from a local yob, who stated he was going to 'break my 'effing neck'.

I recognised the background noise of the establishment he was in and went in, confronted him in front of his mates, and said, 'I'm here'. Needles to say all denials, I arrested him and the next day in court he meekly apologised for what he had said. From then on he was no further grief.

Casual Observer says...

I bring that to your mind?
Bob you are nuts.

I've never threatened you in any way, I have no wish to. You do irritate me as I've said before but I'm not the only one who finds your incessant drivel annoying.

Perhaps I do make too many snide comments but there's no need to throw your toys out of the pram and accuse me of being a stalker. Take it on the chin man - if you want to play out your political fantasies in a comments section of the local rag that's what you are going to get.

Stop playing the victim Bob, it doesn't suit you, ex-copper and all that.

Simply not true Bob - either about me never expressing a view or you believing these threads are supposed to be about constructive view points.

You exploit this site for your own ends, attempting to drown out anyone who doesn't agree with you or totally clamming up when you know you are wrong. You think by beating people over the head with your half-baked, read-about-it-in-the
-UKIP-newsletter opinions you will always win.

Most people just get bored and leave you to it but because I won't, you start accusing me of being a stalker and expect to get sympathy from other readers - grow up man.

In fact there are only a handful of regular contributors who have my respect and you are definitely not one of them.

It may be true that I don't feel obliged to comment on every story and turn it into a party political broadcast but this doesn't mean to say I don't have an opinion, I just don't want to shove it down everyone else's throat.

I think the difference is Bob I don't need to feel respected, valued and recognised on these pages - original thinking has brought me rewards in the real world.

Since it's Christmas though, I promise I'll leave your sorry **** alone for a while, and I won't be checking back for your response since frankly it will probably be guff.

You were right about one thing though - you haven't got respect, are valued or recognised.

In the real world I suspect your rewards are as imaginary as your intelligence.
