ASTRONOMERS in Swindon want others to join them in being dazzled by the stars.

Keen amateur Peter Struve, of Park South, is establishing the Swindon Astronomy Group, which is due to meet for the first time in February.

Peter’s interest in astronomy was written in the stars, as he comes from a long line of distinguished astrophysicists.

“As long as man has walked the planet he has looked towards the stars,” said Peter, 53.

“We have a need to see starry skies. It is beautiful and part of nature. It is also almost a spiritual experience.

“At the end of the day we are all made of star dust.”

The timing of the launch is ideal, as 2009 is the International Year of Astronomy.

The aim of the new group – which already has about a dozen members – is to host star gazing parties around Swindon in places such as Barbury Castle and Lydiard Park away from light pollution. Lecturers will also talk to the group.

Peter said: “Most amateurs start with a cheap pair of binoculars but you can start looking with your naked eyes. It is about learning how to use your eyes.

“Nowadays amateurs use the same imaging equipment scientists had in the 1960s.”

He is setting up a Swindon club even though a Wiltshire group meets in Melksham.

“We have so many people interested that the town is big enough to have its own astronomy club,” he added.

The dad-of-four got his first small basic telescope at the age of eight and one of his most precious memories is his first sight of Saturn.

He said: “My first view of Saturn’s rings was the ultimate ‘wow’ factor. It was absolutely stunning.”

Members will meet in the Lawn Community Centre.

Membership will be about £15 per year with more information available by emailing peterstruve@aol.com or calling 01793 481547.
