£10k bonus for new Nova Hreod teachers

GOOD teachers could be offered £10,000 in extra pay to entice them to work in Nova Hreod School.

The cash incentive from the Government aims to boost achievement in poor performing schools.

From September Nova Hreod may have the chance to attract the best teachers in the country through the scheme, as it is on the Government’s National Challenge hit list.

About 500 schools and 6,000 teachers in England are expected to benefit from the move, and costs will be divided between schools and Whitehall budgets.

South Swindon MP Anne Snelgrove said: “The new measure will allow headteachers to get the best teachers in the schools where they are needed the most and keep them there.

“Offering golden handcuff payments of £10,000 for three years of service will benefit schools across Swindon.”

The idea has been outlined in a social mobility white paper from the Government.

Research has shown that children in Britain are less likely than those in other developed countries to move up the social ladder and get better jobs than their parents.

Ministers believe improving results among children with deprived backgrounds will help lead to a fairer society.

The average teacher’s salary, including performance-related pay, is more than £34,000.

But Councillor Garry Perkins, Swindon Council’s cabinet member for children’s services, dismisses the move as bribery of teachers.

“At the end of the day they are attempting to bribe teachers,” Coun Perkins said. “I thought teaching was always about being a vocational job. This would not be necessary if we had an education system that was fit for purpose.

“Rather than pay teachers more, the Government should allow teachers the freedom to educate children.”

He believes a soft approach to education is driving standards down.

“In developing countries, if you are not educated you starve so education means far much more,” he said.

“Failure seems to be rewarded by this government.”

But North Swindon MP Michael Wills is urging qualifying schools to apply. He said: “I very much welcome this investment in education.

“I hope that every school in Swindon which is eligible will apply for it.”

Nova Hreod School said headteacher Julie Tridgell was unavailable for comment.

Of course, after tax and deductions that £10000 over three years equates to around an extra £1300 a year take home pay. Not altogther a sparkling amount of extra pay on condition you stay at the school for three years.

Also, I believe the school will need to fund 50% of the £10000, so paying this to say 50 teachers will cost the school an extra quarter of a million pounds over three years. The school will have to find that sum from existing budgets, so something will have to go to find that sort of money.

Yet another desperate attempt by this inept government to try and rescue a school system they have allowed to fail miserably over the last 10 years. Snelgrove clearly has no idea what she is talking about any more than the likes of Education Secretary Ed Balls.

A radical overhaul of the system is required, starting by ditching the pointless government targets that act like a ball and chain to schools, a return to teaching skills, a dramatic improvement in school discipline, less of this multicultural nonsense and a return to a more traditional curriculum and teaching methods. The SAT tests were a total waste of time and have thankfully been ditched, but that is only a start to what is really needed and that is a change of government.

“Offering golden handcuff payments of £10,000 for three years of service will benefit schools across Swindon.”

What a spendid comment by AS (so how many Swindon schools qualify?)... and a great indictment of education under Ed Balls.

Not sure that this move will do much for the morale of teachers who already teach there and at other similar schools in Swindon.

When AS loses her seat perhaps she is thinking of going into teaching!

I've just had a word with my boss and demanded that he make me a £10,000 payment on top of my salary to do my job properly. Strangely he told me where to go!!!
Maybe this policy explains why B"anned"D and Woeful Wills are doing such an awful job for the people of Swindon. They're hoping their cheating, useless liar of a boss will extend this ridiculous type of payment to cover MP's!

Surely if the best teachers are tempted to join under performing schools this will have a negative effect on the best schools?
Here's a thought... get rid of "teachers assistants" who now regularly take lessons solo! Then warn the under performing teachers that unless they improve their standards they will face the boot. Finally if there is going to be a financial enticement for anyone it should be for people in the private sector to come in to schools and show the students their skills!

Snelgrove.... Please stop embarrassing yourself and go crawl back under the rock from whence you came. The day will shortly be upon us when you are joining the ever increasing queues at the dole office!

I would like to point out that the average teacher's salary is not £34000-this is likely to be around the maximum that many teachers can earn.
Senior management posts leading up to and including headship will of course attract much higher rates of pay.
'Up to' £10000 for three years, when taxed at 40% may not be as attractive as it sounds and may not compensate for the inherent challenges in such a role. In my experience teachers don't necessarily think of the money when looking at jobs like this and I think this amount is hardly likely to make a diference.
That said, teachers who work in such incredibly challenging circumstances desrve all they can get, as do all the other members of social and support services.

Sorry... but they chose their own career path.

£10k for doing your job - disgusting. The school teachers should be able to and be required to enforce discipline in the schools. Any pupil flaunting the rules should be warned and then parents notified of the possibility of them being held responsible for their childs actions and education. I notice all these handouts never go to areas where people are doing the jobs they are paid for and parents take responsibility for their offsprings behaviour. Used to be good behaviour was rewarded.

Why should teachers who are already well paid, have a great pension scheme, long holidays and full sick pay (for when they feel a bit Stressed), be given £10,000 extra for the guarantee of a job for the next 3 years.
Most of us would just settle for the guarantee of a job without having to take a drop in pay to get it.

Teachers get paid to much as it is and an extra £10,000 for doing the same thing is out of order, especially in the current climate.
They already get nearly ten weeks of the year off, in addition to their 'training days' and strike action. Furthermore they work short days with every weekend off and have great pensions. Not bad if you can get it.
ideas.

Just rang my daughter up and told her she earned £34,000 per year.
That killed the conversation, she's laughing to much to talk.

I must be unwell - first I post two comments in a week that aren't having a pop at BobFM, then I find myself agreeing with Grumpy!

This could be serious..

Just keep taking the tablets and lie down in a darkened room - you'll be fine in a day or so and be back to your normal self.
