Living wall plan for Canal Walk goes on show

RESIDENTS turned up to see how a new look for Swindon town centre will reflect its canal past.

The designers behind the regeneration proposal for Canal Walk say that a green look will help soften Swindon’s concrete appearance.

Visitors to the project’s exhibition in the Brunel Centre yesterday saw designs for a living green wall, modern sculpture, more trees and ornate grooves in the pavement.

Nick Conder, project manager at the New Swindon Company, said: “We wanted to achieve a garden feel where people can sit, chat and meet.

“We want to make Swindon people proud. It is not just a shopping location. We are trying to get people to come here, see the art and create a pleasant environment.”

There are plans to shift the Jubilee Clock to the train station and replace it with art.

The Golden Lion will be moved to a different part of the street.

John Birch, 76, of Haydon Wick, said: “I think the appearance of the town centre matters a lot. It is very dreary at the moment.”

Work on Canal Walk will start in July and it is expected to be completed by April next year. Exhibitions will be held at the Brunel Centre today from 10am until 1.30pm.

Set up a hedge fund perhaps.

Could we please just have a decent shopping centre, no amount of pointless gimmicks like this will change the fact that every other shop is closed and we have a windblown concrete hole of a town centre surrounded by derilict plots. We dont need hedges, giant TV screens nailed to carparks or bliddy canals.

The council can't even maintain the new things which we already have namely the jubilee clock (which never shows the correct time) and the flower beds by the big screen which are constantly overgrown.

Can we have a commitment from the council that they have considered maintenance?

I've just returned from Weymouth.
The old harbour used to have a brewery, powered by steam. It is now "regenerated", with a small steam engine display, craft shops, a small town museum, cafes etc.

By contrast Swindon is prepared to sacrifice the Mechanics building, holding far greater history, and our council think we need a --- hedge.

I've cancelled my holiday to Paris.
Apparently Swindon will have more to offer.
A hedge, a TV screen, massive housing estates, history dating back to 2002,an empty nature reserve surrounded by more flats, and a receipt for a canal feasability study. Wow!

Or I might try the recommendation of Weymouth. At least I could get a boat to France, if I change my mind

That was the Devonish Brewery, not the most wonderful of beers mind. And Weymouth council are now trying to remove the 'famous' tramway from the Quay, so I dont think they are much bothered by History either.

Captain--Eldridge Pope is a better beer. Dorchester Ale. We even had one of their pubs here__remember?

Hmm,
Shame about the tramway. That type of transport is proving quite useful in some european countries, but I think you can see what I mean about the building, and its comparison with the Mechanics building.
Shame about the beer too

Eldridge Pope USED to be good beer, the brewery has been closed for some years which is a great shame.
