Radio 1's Big Weekend in Swindon: full details

MUSIC stars, including Snow Patrol, will send waves through Lydiard Park when Radio 1’s Big Weekend comes to Swindon.

The BBC has confirmed the flagship music event will take place here on Saturday, May 9 and Sunday, May 10.

Today Snow Patrol performed live at a Radio 1 broadcast from O'Neills, off Fleet Street, in Swindon where DJ Chris Moyles announced the event coming to the town. Crowds of music fans gathered outside in the hope of seeing the stars.

Snow Patrol were joined by N-Dubz – also due to play here in May.

Chris said: “It’s the best weekend we have at Radio 1 and we always try to bring it to places that don’t normally get big events like this. The people of Swindon are going to love it.”

The site holds 20,000 and most of the free tickets will go to residents in the town and surrounding areas.

Four stages will be set up at Lydiard Park for the festival, which saw Madonna perform in Mote Park, Maidstone last year. The event is the is the UK’s biggest free ticketed music festival.

Jason Carter, Radio 1’s editor of live music and events, said: “BBC Radio 1 is delighted to be heading to Swindon this year.

It’s our ninth Big Weekend and we’ll be bringing some of the biggest international and UK artists to Lydiard Park.

“It promises to be the perfect start to the UK Festival season and provides a fantastic opportunity for Radio 1 to put a national focus on Swindon and the South West region and all that it has to offer.”

All the action hosted by DJs will be broadcast live on Radio 1 with highlights on BBC 3.

“This is a fantastic announcement for Swindon and we are working in partnership with Radio 1 to make sure that this is the best Big Weekend ever staged,” said Phil Young, cabinet member for culture, regeneration and economic development.

“As soon as Radio 1 approached the council we were determined to make this happen in Swindon and when the eyes of the world are focussed on us for the weekend we will have a great opportunity to leave all of those who attend, watch and listen with a positive impression of our thriving town and borough.”

Details of how to get free tickets and the exact line-up will be announced as the festival draws closer at www.bbc.co.uk/radio1 and in the Adver.

I think this event is a disgrace.

I live close to Lydiard Park and really do not want this sort of event being held there and all the wrong sort of people it atracts, along with all the anti social behaviour that will happen.

Lydiard Park is a respectable park and we really do not want this type of event being held in the psrk.

I am already making plans for a protest, many of neighbours are also up in arms about it and I will be speaking to my councillor and MP very soon.

There will be s determined flight to stop this horrific event from taking place.

It's a shame it's the same SBC who have conspired to ensure the Mecca Bingo Hall remains boarded up and rotting than re-opening as a live music venue, but hey, even SBC wouldn't screw up this opportunity of bringing nationwide attention to the town.

Hopefully, now that Lydiard Park has a 29,999 capacity agreement, this will see the start of many more outdoor live music events at the Park - after all, it could become an absolutely stunning summer months venue for large acts IF somebody at the council has the good sense to make it happen.

The Big Weekend is a golden opportunity to move the entire music scene in Swindon up the ladder a rung or two - let's make the best of it and not just enjoy a couple of day's worth of bands and then go back to one band a month at the Oasis.

This is a massive thing for Swindon and it's time this town deserved a bit of something exciting rather than "trolley in local canal" How about that weekend you go away? That way you wont have to put up with the excitement, the atmosphere and generally all the fun people will have!!! As for Damien... I agree.... TALK IN CODE!!!! :o)

I live in a quiet respectable part of Swindon and if I wanted to live next door to a rave I certainly would not be living here.

Lydiard Park is a nice park and should not be ruined with drug taking, litter and sex acts.

The congestion, noise and pollution will be unbearable and it has to be stopped.

What a miserable so-and-so! We (Swindon) never get picked for anything like this and it's about bloody time! The content of the crowd will depend on whoever is chosen to receive tickets so there's no guarantee it'll all be druggies!! I've never heard anything bad about any other Radio 1 weekend events and they've done 9 of these now! They have more drug trouble at Glastonbury than they'll have here and you have to pay a fortune to go there!!

I think it's a great thing and I will definitely be applying for tickets. Like Chris Moyles said this morning, priority will be given to local people because otherwise what's the point?, they could do a massive gig anywhere if they wanted just anybody!!

My in-laws live in Grange Park so I'll be vying for a free parking space too!

As Opinionated Wench said 'Go away that weekend!' while everyone else has a good time without you!

This is the most silly nonsense i have ever heard. Me and my friends hope to attend this and i can certainly tell you we are not like as you describe above.

This is a great event really putting Swindon on the map. People like you moan about SBC doing nothing etc etc and in a time of gloom with the economy this is giving Swindon a great weekend to enjoy!

Lydiard park should have more events like this, they happen up and down the country each summer so why not Swindon.

I have known this event has been coming to swindon for a few months now and so relieved i dont have to keep it a secret anymore!

Ive lived in Swindon all my life and have not seen anything this big promoted for us.

Swindon will now be on the map properly and all I can say is LETS GET THIS !!!

As for protesting - words fail me - this is something good for the Swindon Community.

Just a moment - I'm 45+ and have lots of cats - and I can't wait for this event to happen. If I don't get a ticket I do know people who live close by and will enjoy it with them in their garden.

I think this is fantastic for Swindon and look forward to hearing what bands are coming.

I'm with others thinking that mrdc is just a wind up. Why would anybody be that nasty to even think of spoiling so many peoples fun. Trying to stop it happening will fail anyway.

Bring it on.

I think this a brilliant idea and its a great way of putting Swindon on the map, many other towns and cities have events like this running all of the time, In response to people trying to protest, its a shame as it is people like this that need to lighten up and prevent anything fun from happening in the town.
I am sure that Swindon is responsible enough to ensure that the park is well maintained before and after the event and that they will have measures in place to ensure that if anything was to go wrong, it would be dealt with promptly.
In our current economic crisis its gives us all something to look forward to.

If you really are serious (big IF) do you cry yourself to sleep on firework night?

Why not go away for the weekend, or charge people £10 to park outside you house. Or move. Or stick your head in a pig.

this gentleman has got it spot on. this is the sort of thing that will just create chaos. the wildlife around lydiard park is fantastic, im sure that they will be scared out of their natural habitat towards the m4 where not only they but also people on the road could get seriously injured if not fatally. ridiculous idea. on another point is it a good example to have crass chris moyles as a roll-model for young children? i for one think not!

oh please. don't think i will be wasting brain cells on trying. Why dont you put petitions in the rest of the WB pubs and West Swindon ones. One pub on the end of the outskirts of WB is not going to be very representative. I pop in and ask to see how many people have signed it. If this comments thread is any indication, then i suspect it might be rather one sided (25 or so for, 2 against so far). Does the adver want to do a poll for this?

As localgirl80 says, Firework night, hot air balloon and party in the park are fairly regular events. I have also been present when the army has put on rather noisy displays. Was there a corresponding rise in motorway or highway accidents on these occasions?

ask the animals how popular it was with them. im sure they didnt enjoy them. its a park not a live music venue. now im not against live music, in fact, quite the opposite. i remember watching the beatles several times beack in the sixties, but that was not at the detriment of local wildlife

i will be keeping a petition in the prince of wales pub in wootton bassett and if anyone wishes to sign it they will need to show proof of i.d. this will stop trouble makers like yourself from trying to stop people expressing an opinion. get round that one!

Are there going to be some good Silver and Brass Bands and a Barbers' Shop Quartet?

the fact that a petition is being set up just shows you have far to much time on your hands.

People moan about SBC and not doing things for the town. People should not underestimate this will be so much money to the town and really push it towards this so called city status that people want.

I do not have a major problem with the event. However I do have a problem with it beig held on my doorstep. The area round Lydiard Park is a resptable area for respectable people and I dont seetin why it should handed over to thugs, social drop outs, chavs, alcoholics.

I have no issue about attracting people to Swindon but I do attracting the wrong type of person and we dont any of the above.

I think its ok for the event to be held but on a scaled down version. The big square in front of House of Fraser could be used and so could the football ground.

I have reported this concert to my local MP, and I have just written to Gordon Brown, about cancelling the concert due to health and saftey grounds due to the area, and wildlife, its a disgrace it should be held there...............

......... had you going there didnt I? LOL, I think its a great idea Swindon can get some coverage for a change, its just a shame the town centre isnt in beter nick, because most of the visitors from outside of town will spend the day, or come the day before the event to have a look round,o well you cant win them all,

And with one paragraph, you invalidate your own argument. You are nothing but Victor Meldrew type Nimby. If the concert was on the other side of town, it would be fine? If it was at the football ground, then what about the people who live around it, a far more densely populated area.
And on what basis do you charge radio 1 listeners as being "thugs, social drop outs, chavs and alcoholics"? I am a big fan of Radio 1, am aged 30, married, work in the defence industry after serving in Iraq with the Army (hence patriotic) and rarely drink. I have no criminal record and have never claimed benfits. Doesnt really fit your stereotype does it. And by the way, i also live about 5 minutes walk from the venue. I am a little concerned about parking, but its ok, my house has its own driveway :)

I was so excited when I found out about Radio 1 Big Weekend coming here, kinda gutted it would be at lydiard...it would be much more amusing at Coate Water! Just thinking of a floating crowd on the lake, with the bands playing on the diving board things (Obviously only the greats on the higher level!) :)
It will be so good for Swindon's lame reputation, and so what if Lydiard's grass is going to be a tad ruffled for a weekend?! It is gonna do so well for Swindon's revenue. Just hoping I'm lucky enough for tickets :D

Hi, I think this is fantastic news with gloomy news about recession Honda's shutdown it's nice to have something to look forward to. I can appreciate mrdc 19's comments, it's free country and you are entitled opinion, I would advise you think carefully about this as I doubt very much that the BBC are arranging a open air free concert for a capacity of 40'000 for a weekend of music bringing to Swindon some of biggest acts in the uk to upset Swindon residents. I am neither a chav or any of the other stereotypes that you have been fed by a fear inducing media magnet. Why not apply, seriously put your mind at rest you might enjoy it, I think it's about time the people in Swindon had some positive news.

Hahaha. Nice try at a wind up. If you really are serious (big IF) do you cry yourself to sleep on firework night? Why not go away for the weekend, or charge people £10 to park outside you house. Or move. Or stick your head in a pig. It's a one off. I'm sure you'll cope.

My main worry for this event is the logistics - after seeing the pandemonium caused by previous "Party in the Parks" I have little confidence that SBC can arrange something of this scale without attendant chaos. In previous years entering Lydiard Park was fine, with marshals showing you to the parking spaces - yet come the end of the night, utter bedlam where you had to fend for yourself in the dark of the park, and the marshals had vanished. I hope Radio 1 are handling this side of things as well as the music!!

I must say that there are a fair few people like mrdc19 out there. They are a very vocal minority. They often object to events which many will enjoy and, in the end, organisers just say 'stuff it - what's the point'. It's depressing but all you can do is prove them wrong.

I also organise a beer festival that attracts over well over 1,000 people. There are some (mainly)elderly ladies who live nearby and I always make sure they know what's happening and when. A year or so ago one wrote to me saying that it wasn't her sort of thing but she appreciated that a lot of people got a lot of fun out of the event. And, as it was only for a short time, she was making alternative arrangements. Hats off to that lady.

I live next to Lydiard Park and feel that this concert is one of the best things to happen in Swindon. I have no concerns at all about the people who will attend this concert as most will be from Swindon and will im sure respect local residents and property. Radio One is a family friendly station and the Big Weekend will be also. I will certainly be trying for a ticket and good luck to everyone.. hope you all get one.

I have no idea how you can say this! This is a fantastic idea and will encourage young people to be off the streets for the weekend! That is very sterotypical of festivals as well: anti-social behaviour! Surely people will be going to have a good time and enjoy theirselfs for the day! For Gods sake, it's for one weekend in May, that's it, just lets it go for one weekend and let people enjoy theirselfs!

Why is it that you have to label people? I think you are just pathetic! This event will bring loads of money into Swindon’s local economy due to all the tourism. I also don’t understand where you are coming from when u quote “social drop outs” because excuse me but I am going to try to attend the event and I am in full time education, therefore I am no dropout. Also you say about the attraction of the wrong people to Swindon, well yet again you are labelling people, what is your problem? Another problem with what you are saying is about the location. No matter where it is held we will still have thugs, social drop outs, chavs, alcoholics just like yourself complaining. Just get a life, this is going to happen once, and once only, never again! You pathetic person!

criticism based on ignorance is absurd

I hope local bands such as TIC, 2SM, etc get to play support, also if there's a chill-out tent there's lots of ambient artists around e.g. Edge Effect, 4m33s, etc all in Swindon (shock!!)
