Coate Water's Nature Reserve has new heron chicks

BIRD lovers can visit Coate Water’s nature reserve this weekend to see newly hatched heron chicks.

Twitchers can join a 1.5 mile stroll on Saturday and watch them from the hides, learn more about herons and hopefully watch as the parents feed the young.

The two and a half hour walk will be guided by the park’s ranger team and starts at 10.30am, meeting at the Coate ranger centre at Coate Water.

Places should be booked in advance by calling Coate Ranger Centre on 01793 490150.

Now watch out for your fish ponds ... the heron's insatiable appetite is nothing but a curse to those who try to keep them away from their pet fish.

Is that why Heron Homes want to build there?

Quite so donkey - On my way to work last week this large bird flew across in front of my car and perched on a nearby garden fence and yes it was a Heron.

Well if the builders come soon enough next year to build the University they could make Heron omelettes.
Should be tasty.....

stopping herons eating fish from ponds is not difficult, same as cats.put mesh over it.
i think herons are fantastic looking birds and very mysterious as they have been around for thousands of years.

i've also noted the decline in the posts again lately.it had improved until recently

The Heronry at Coate is one of the largest in the UK so definitely worth a visit. I'll try to be there on Saturday.

Visitors can also visit a small field of grave - A sort of "mini-Avebury" or alternatively look at green field soon to be the Student's Union Bar.

I don't think the RSPB has anything to do with the Heronry at Coate, does it?
The Rangers see to the welfare of the birds. That is why the walk is organised by the Ranger Team.
Also, wouldn't it be hard to differentiate beween the chicks, even with names?
Will make a grand walk though, looking forward to it.

BB methinks you are taking the chick naming thing a tad too seriously!

The best way to prevent herons from raiding your fish pond, is an infra red motion sensor, liknked to a water sprayer.
You can buy them from World of Water. They don't spoil the appearance of your pond like a net does.
I had the largest heron, I have ever seen, land next to my pond this afternoon. I'll wait to see how greedy it is before I rig up the device. I prefer herons, hunting for food, to cats merely playing with the fish, then leaving them at the side of the pond to die, before returning home for a bowl of whiskas.

I find a 12 bore much more effective in despatching cats!
