Big Weekend: the line-up for May 9 & 10

Lily Allen is coming to Swindon for the Big Weekend Lily Allen is coming to Swindon for the Big Weekend

LILY Allen, Kasabian and Franz Ferdinand will be among the headline acts at the Big Weekend music festival, which is taking place at Swindon's Lydiard Park next month.

Radio 1 DJ Zane Lowe joined Chris Moyles on his breakfast show this morning to announce the line-up for the event on May 9 and 10.

On the main stage on Saturday, acts include: Snow Patrol, Kasabian, Dizzee Rascal, The Script, Calvin Harris, The Wombats, Daniel Merriweather and The Saturdays.

On the Sunday, Lily Allen will perform, as will Franz Ferdinand, Akon, Scouting For Girls, Alesha Dixon, N-Dubz and Ne-Yo.

On the In New Music We Trust Stage, fans who gets tickets for the Saturday will be able to see Basement Jaxx, Doves, Jack Penate, Friendly Fires, Deadmau5, Florence & The Machine, The King Blues and Fightstar.

The next day the stage will see the likes of The Enemy, Maximo Park, Gossip, Enter Shikari, Tinchy Stryder, Chase & Status, Ladyhawke and White Lies.

Jason Carter, Radio 1 Live Music & Events editor, said: “With four stages packed with the best UK and international talent, along with new and emerging artists it promises to be a weekend to remember."

Swindon councillor Phil Young said: “What a great line up and there is no doubt that this is the biggest thing to happen in Swindon for years. I am very proud to be hosting such a high profile event and we all now have the chance to show the world what a great place Swindon is.”

To be in with a chance of getting a pair of tickets, you need to register on the Radio 1 website.

Registration opens at 8.15am tomorrow and runs until 10am next Monday.

There are 40,000 tickets available across the weekend. Tickets are free, but last year more than half a million people applied for them and demand is expected to be huge again this year. Each lucky applicant will receive a pair of tickets for either Saturday or Sunday.

The station has warned fans the only way of getting tickets is to register online and not to attempt to buy tickets second-hand through other websites.

Ebay will remove all auctions for Big Weekend tickets.

The BBC uses complicated technology to make sure the distribution of tickets is fair, meaning that only one pair of tickets will be given to each household.

Tickets will be allocated randomly, but weighted in favour of those living in Swindon and the surrounding area, with a smaller amount distributed nationally.

You can register for tickets at anytime before the closing date – it won’t make any difference if you fill out the form within the first five minutes of it opening or 30 minutes before the deadline on Monday.

If you don’t have access to a computer at home, don’t forget you can access the internet at the Central Library and others across the town.

Log on to www.seetickets.com/BBC/BigWeekend/ to register.

Keep an eye on our website throughout the day as more acts are due to be announced...

Don't knock it - at least this story will take presidence over all the rest of the non-stories that seem to appear on non-news days.

But is this what David Murray-John actually had in mind when he bought Lydiard for Swindon Corporation?

I would have named three quarters of those. No knock em dead names. Most have played the Oasis, dont just take my opinion. my 3 kids, who were looking forward to it said 'is that it'. Wheres Madonna, Pussycat Dolls, Katy Perry, Pink ?????

Jimmy Razor - you miserable git!

This is a FREE event. Not all these acts are to my taste but I think it's an incredible line-up.

If you want to go and see Madonna and the rest then I suggest you get yourself to Ticketmaster and pay for a ticket.

If you are not happy with the Radio 1 event, then don't register for tickets, as this will allow other people who do want to see thee acts a better chance of doing so.

Well I'm excited, rather than complain of who isn't there I'm looking forward to who is there......can't wait for Bonkers to be blasted out from the main stage!!!
Also the carnival atmosphere of Basement Jaxx.
Amongst others Ladyhawke is a great talent, Lily Allen, Snow Patrol and Franz Ferdinand are big names and solid acts.

Here's hoping I get lucky on the tickets!!!

ERR Yeah right Phil!! you only have to look at the quality boarded up shops in the Town Centre - the disappearing big names like H of F - well its almost gone - seconds outlet store now. The non- functioning millenium clock, the gross new library obscuring the classic Town Hall, oh and the re-erection!of the railings in Faringdon Road Park -yes sir!! Swinetown is really up there with the Cheltenham's and the Bath' eh?

I’m more of a TOG myself, but I hope to go if I get lucky on the tickets.

It looks like it will be a great event, and I will enjoy it as much for the atmosphere as anything else. I reckon Lilly Allen and the Franz Ferdinands will be worth seeing.

As far as Chris Moyles goes, he may be a podgy bloke with grey hair but he still managed to climb Kilimanjaro, and he took Fearne Cotton and 2/5ths of Girls Aloud with him!

I'm actually quite fussy about who I pay and see, having attended many, many concerts in this country and elsewhere. I've seen plenty of high-profile international acts and paid a lot of money for tickets.

The fact that this FREE concert is happening on my doorstep is amazing. It's a chance to see many new acts for FREE that I ordinarily wouldn't go and see.

How you can find anything to moan about is beyond me.

As for Chris Moyles - I agree that he is a certified tw*t of the highest order, but I'm not going to see him - assuming I'm lucky enough to get a ticket at all.

This is a FREE event. Has that bit not sunk in yet?

I suggest that you spend the weekend elsewere with the other miserable gits with nothing better to do than complain.

No wonder this town gets so much stick. Even when a fantastic event like this happens, the small minded petty little morons who inhabit it just moan and whine.

GET A LIFE.

Exactly Chilli. All they've done is pull out of a hat most of the bands who have played the Oasis in the last 2 years. After the hype, they aint got Madonna, Pink, Britney, Pussycat Dolls, Girls Aloud,Take That,SWINDON'S Robbie Williams,Christina Aguilera.. Out of that list,Madonna, maybe Mr Williams would have made me and the missus apply for tickets... but the line up is lazy, its predictable, but it definately AINT got a headline act.

"BIG WEEKEND" I hear and I am sure it will be denied by the Council but because of Swindon Councils lack of financial budgeting for this event, those of us who live in Swindon "WILL BE PAYING FOR THIS EVENT" (council tax maybe?) while the rest of the country pay nothing...they never even accounted financially for the policing of this event!

Hiya, I know what what you guys mean about headline acts - but hey - it's free, you know the saying about never looking a gift horse in the mouth?

My only concern is the 2 tickets per household bit! Living right next to Lydiard, we are probably gonna be more disturbed by this weekend than most and yet we can only get 2 tickets? I have 2 15 year olds. Do they no=t need a ticket or must we go in in shifts??????

Yes the event is free but that is a awful line up of E rate popstars. I was so excited but won't be bothering to register for tickets as it is laughable that this is all the people they could get. What a laugh!

Rebo says...
12:32pm Tue 14 Apr 09

Its not free though is it? We're paying for it. This is going to cost 100s of £1000s and Swindon council tax payers are footing the bill. Maybe I am a grumpy old man but I would prefer a fairer lottery system and some bigger names on the bill for my cash!!

iloveswindon says...
12:40pm Tue 14 Apr 09

Even if it is 'free', its not going to make me like the line-up anymore....

Really disappointed.

1:12pm Tue 14 Apr 09

The whole 2 tickets per address lottery is a joke, I was going to register to see if I was lucky enough to get tickets but now it is just not worth the bother or arguments it is going to cause by deciding who is going to go out of the 4 of us (2 Adults, 2 Kids).

Security word cash-show you could'nt make it up could you?

Even Angrier Monkey says...

I cant help but think that those who are moaning have never heard of most of the acts performong because they dont have a clue about music.

Some of them have won brit awards. Many have had no 1 albums. Many have been critically aclaimed. Ne-yo is an international star (not my cup of tea, but still)

Theres a good mix of more established and new acts which should cater for every taste.

Get a life. Stop complaining about the best thing to happen in Swindon for a long time.

Why do I have the horrible feeling that a certain type of person will apply for tickets for this, be lucky enough to get them and then either not attend at all or simply whinge about it all day long and for weeks afterwards?

Don't like the idea of the Big Weekend? Fine, please don't apply for tickets.

Don't like bands or think they're 'too small' for you? Fine, please don't apply for tickets.

Don't like the fact that, just like other comparable festivals, you're not allowed to take your manky sandwiches and vodka and Coke in a 2 litre bottle in with you? Fine, please don't apply for tickets.

The way some people are talking, you'd be forgiven for thinking they were being forced to attend.

And thank God Madonna isn't there this year, who wants to watch a clapped out old has-been.

And as for costs, yes, it will cost the Council c.£200,000 to host and stage the event - but the additional revenue the event will bring to the town is (rather conservatively IMO) estimated at c.£1.5m which, as investments go, will probably turn out to be one of the best any Swindon Council has ever made.

Who would you like to see?

I wasnt using a brit award as a gold standard of quality, just illustrating the point that the line up is far from a list of nobodies.

There are no international megastars on the list, but i couldnt care less. The people on the list have sold millions of records in the past few years both in the UK and in some cases abroad as well. FACT.

I don't mind other people's opinions (although inane ones such as yours verge on the irritating), but what I find very stupid is when people whinge about something they have absolutely no need to attend if they feel it's going to be that bad.

Deary me, what a lot of miserable people out there!!! Me and my 16 year old daughter are music crazy and spend hundreds of pounds every year travelling around the country to see our favourite bands.(Braving First Great Western trains and some very dodgy hotel rooms) When we heard Swindon was to the host the Big Weekend we were so happy as we might get the chance to see some great bands without having to travel. To us the line up is amazing as Franz, Maximo and Kasabian are our favourite 3 bands (also well chuffed that White Lies and Friendly Fire are going to be heard by big crowds, as they deserve to be). There are a few people we're not too keen on but that won't spoil anything for us if we are lucky enough to get tickets. As has been said previously i fear real music fans won't get the tickets and will miss out on the chance of attending such a great event. I don't even care that we wouldn't be able to take our own food, there is nothing that would ruin this for us if we were lucky enough to get tickets.
So i say, stop moaning and if you don't like it don't register. Hopefully the crowds for this event will show the bands what a great reception they would get if they came back to play at a later date. Might this also persuade those who stand in the way of progress that having a dedicated live music venue (namely the old bingo building) in this town would be a fantastic investment, cultural as well as financially

Like all big festivals, you cannot have people bring in whatever food and drink they like as some people would abuse it and bring in cases of lager, cheap spirits etc. and try to sell them inside the festival.

Don't people realise that at events such as this the organisers have to keep full control over what food and alcohol is consumed at the venue?

What it somebody sold you a dodgy sandwich and you got food poisoning? You'd seen blame the organisers for letting people take food in.

What if you bought a bottle of wine from somebody and found they switched the labels or half filled it with water? You'd soon complain about the organisers letting people take alcohol in.

The reasons why you are not allowed to take anything you want into the festival are very obvious and actually make perfect sense.

Who the hell wants to take a picnic to such an event in any case? It's an all-day live music festival, not a day out for train spotters.

And remember, it's only two ticket per household, so it's hardly as if you'll be needing to feed the whole family on the cheap.

I disn't say picnic, I simply said food and drink, that would be enough to sustain you for the long hours of the festival, not a five course formal spread.
Doh !!

At least we know how to actually spell Dizzee Rascal. That aside, no, I will actually be there to see Enter Shikari and The Prodigy. And I'm not 40+.
I am not 40+ either. I will be going to see Eric Prydz and Calvin Harris, Judge Jules etc. Not the other crap.

LILY Allen, Kasabian and Franz Ferdinand will be among the headline acts at the Big Weekend music festival, which is taking place at Swindon's Lydiard Park next month.

And no doubt, they'll all be miming to a soundtrack.
Wonderful

Long live real Rock 'n' Roll

Funnilly enough I too Kasabian have a reputation as a cracking live act and have won awards for their performances.

In fact I'd be willing to bet that virtually every act at The big weekend will sing live, with th possible exception of some of the trashier pop acts like the saturdays.

Dont let facts get in the way of ill informed ignorance though

I was going to make my comment on Tuesday the only one, however i feel i have to correct I Too about Franz Ferdinand. These guys are my fave band, and having seen them live, and meeting them, i can assure him that they most definitely do not mime to any soundtrack. Kasabain are also fantastic genuine performers, although i cannot speak for Lily Allen! The "real" bands, at this event will all play live

i think we should all wait and see- the rumours are there are more tba...... good names too. They are not going to announce the headlines until the last minute to create excitement in the town, who in their right mind shows all their cards straight away.........the longer they leave the 'good acts' out of the line up, the longer the locals will speculate and therefore promote their event even more- think about it!

Will people STOP banging on about this being a 'free' event?!!! Get your minds out of neutral! Everyone who pays a TV license fee is seeing a chunk of that cash subsidise this - and everyone who pays council tax will also see a slice of that subsidising this. The acts ARE being paid you know! Its weird - go visit another thread on the Adver - and you see unanimous agreement that pushing up parking in town to raise £120k for the council coffers is a really stupid idea. Yet for the sake of a single weekend, SBC could be spending £500k (what is cost Cardiff city council) of unbudgeted money - but thats ok - and to point out the hypocrisy is just 'whinging'. Hahaha! Swindon's populated by moral pygmies isn't it? As long as someone gets to have a free jolly for a day, everything's 'vibrant' and exciting!

There's no such thing as a free lunch. For 95% of us to be forced to end up paying for this through the back-door when it should be a commercial event smacks of double standards to me.
