THE Duchess of Cornwall will officially open the latest restoration project on the Wilts & Berks Canal today.

Her Royal Highness will open Double Bridge at Pewsham Lock and will be met by county and civic dignitaries and introduced to the trust’s chairman, John Laverick.

She will then meet the team of volunteers who have worked on restoring Double Bridge and unveil a plaque to commemorate the opening.

Wiltshire Youth Canoe Club canoeists will then navigate through the bridge – this will be the first boating traffic since the navigation was closed in 1914.

Double Bridge and the associated canal restoration is the first part of a much larger current project in this area to restore all the waterway and structures from Lacock to Pewsham Locks.

The aim of the Wilts & Berks Canal Trust is to restore a continuous navigable waterway.
