Tenants will see the rent rise cut

TENANTS in council properties will see their rent increases slashed after Swindon Council agreed to bid for Government funding.

But politicians on both sides of the political divide have been quick to claim credit.

North Swindon MP Michael Wills said: “The Government announced in March that they were prepared to offer local authorities the opportunity to bid for additional subsidy, if, and only if, they revisited the level of rents sent for council tenants and reduced them by that amount.”

Mr Wills claimed he urged council leader Rod Bluh to take up the scheme and contacted ministers on the council’s behalf to get further details.

He said: “I am delighted that they have now listened to my advice and chosen to bid for this new Government money to provide real help to Swindon’s council tenants.”

But Coun David Renard, the cabinet member for health, housing and adult social care, remembered things slightly differently.

He said: “I welcome it for the tenants but the Government could have worked a lot quicker.

“They proposed a formula which worked out at 6.2 per cent.

“We went out to consultation on that but at the same time we wrote to the Government to say that we didn’t think that level of increase was right when we are talking about the poorest people in our society at a time of great need.

“The Government didn’t get round to agreeing to us until we had gone through that process.”

South Swindon MP Anne Snelgrove said she was pleased for her constituents.

She said: “I am glad to see that the council has seen the sense of bidding for this money as it will make all the difference to many of my constituents during the current economic climate.

“It is a high priority of mine and the Government to ensure that real help is given to tenants.”

Bureaucracy in action. Take with one hand and give away with the other.

How many tenants would have actually paid more, rather than simply receiving more housing benefits?

Nice to see Labour buying votes again.

Given that a large percentage of Council tenants get their rent paid for them by the taxpayer (and will therefore be unaffected by the recession), or pay far below the true market value, why should they be entitled to this money when tens of thousands of fixed rate mortgage holders in the town have not seen their monthly outgoings reduced at all during Mr Brown's recession?

Hey, why not fork out more of our HARD EARNED taxpayers money, on spongers of the system!! It's not as if they give a flying fig that our hand outs to them increases. Just another political vote-buying scam, making the people who work hard, pay harder for the lazy work-shy of this country!!

First point, this has been going on since the end of March, so why only being reported now, some 2 months later! Secondly, all Councils with their own housing stock are applying for it so not sure why MP's and Councillors are taking any credit as this would have been done anyway by the Council. The MP's in particular should be keeping vey quiet on this issue as it was they who until the eleventh hour refused to reduce the 6.2% rent increase they implemented on the Council, by which time all the tenants had already been advised of the larger increase. If Mr Wills wants to get involved, maybe he would like the pay the 30 odd grand it will cost the housing department (or rather the tenants through their rent) to make the changes his Government caused with their inability to get things right first time!
To "it'spavagain" about 65% of tenants are on some form of benefit so only 35% will be affected. To "common dreads" a bit confused by your post. fixed rate mortgage holders will see no rise this year but tenants rents will rise by 3.1% so who will be better off!
To "Blind Fury" we all know there are far too many "scroungers" on benefits who see this as a life choice rather than the safety net it should be but that is the fault of the weak Govt. Maybe if you had lost your job recently you would be grateful for a system that does help those in need. You cant blame some for playing the system when we see MP's, MEP's, Bank Bosses, Big Businesses and even those "working for cash" or those who "pay for jobs in cash" all of whom are just playing the system because they can!!
We can all blame human nature but we seem to forget that human nature comes from humans so if we want to change it we can, the problem is most people dont want to because then they might actaully have to work for a living and be responsible and accountable.
This is just another attempt by the self serving politicians to get thier names in the papers and boost their ego's when they had absolutely nothing to do with the decision being made!!!

Yes, let's blame the government for it all....not the scroungers who can't be arsed to put something back into society!
The rich get richer, the poor get richer (with their 42" HD tellys) and the hard working folk get to fork out yet again!!
