A COMPUTER museum is being rehomed one piece at a time.

But organisers are appealing to the public for help in moving and transporting the 2,500 items of computer equipment that range from old-fashioned keyboards to a comptometer to its new base in Theatre Square over the next five weeks.

The museum has been housed in the University of Bath’s Oakfield campus for the last five years after it was started up by Jeremy Holt and Simon Webb, but now that the university has pulled out of Swindon, it was left homeless.

In the past the museum has attracted visitors from all over the world from 40 different countries, including Japan, and organisers had offers from Exeter, Essex and abroad to rehouse it.

Museum curator Mr Webb said: “The University of Bath was a great place to start, but it was always difficult, we never had any passing trade.

“Having a town centre site is absolutely fantastic, we’re thrilled with this and we hope to do lots of exciting things here.”

Council leader Rod Bluh, and fellow councillors Phil Young, and Peter Greenhalgh were on hand to help with the move and reminisce.

The museum plans to open on Saturdays from July, though with more volunteers it could extend its opening times.

Anyone who might be able to help with transport or offer their time during or after the re-location should call 07834 375628 or email info@museum-of-computing.org.uk.
