Our reporters are waiting to hear from you

THE Swindon Advertiser has revamped the way it reports on local issues.

The paper’s team of journalists have all been assigned patches and portfolios to ensure nobody within the Adver’s reach is neglected.

Issues including crime, health, politics, education, transport and the environment now all have their own dedicated journalist.

Every area of the town – including its surrounding villages – has also been assigned its own correspondent.

Editor Dave King said: “Here at the Adver we are committed to covering the stories our readers deserve to know.

“We also want to promote the town and the achievements of its individuals and community groups.

“However, we need readers to let us know about the stories they think we should be covering.

“If you have a story you think should be featured in the Adver, please get in touch with our newsdesk on 01793 501802 or one of our reporters.”

Sarah Hilley will continue in her role as education reporter, but will also report on West Swindon, including Westlea, Freshbrook and Toothill.

Sarah studied biochemistry at the University of Ulster before joining the Adver two years ago.

She said: “I am interested in stories of human achievement.”

Ben Perrin is the Adver’s new crime reporter. Ben has been working for the paper for two years and has lived in Wiltshire since he was three-years-old.

Ben, who will also cover the Walcot and Parks areas of Swindon, said: “I’m particularly interested in gritty crime stories – be it a major incident or ongoing problems of antisocial behaviour.”

People living in North Swindon — including Penhill, Pinehurst, Haydon Wick and Moredon residents — should contact Jeremy Grimaldi with their stories.

Jeremy was a corporate sales manager in Toronto, Canada, before joining the Adver 18 months ago. He is also responsible for transport stories.

Jeremy said: “I am always keen to stand up for the people of Swindon regardless of the subject matter.”

James Wallin has covered issues including speed cameras, the Eastern Development Area (EDA) and plans to regenerate Swindon’s town centre as the Adver’s political reporter.

He is also responsible for Old Town, the town centre and Rodbourne.

James said: “I am passionate about telling our readers the truth about how their taxes are spent.”

Hayley Court is the Adver’s health correspondent.

Hayley recently spent an evening with a crew of paramedics and broke news of Swindon’s first case of swine flu.

She is also responsible for East Swindon including Stratton, Covingham, Eldene, Liden and Dorcan.

Hayley said: “I want to cover peoples experiences of healthcare in Swindon — be they good or bad.”

Emma Streatfield is the Adver’s new communities and environment reporter.

Emma studied English at the University of Warwick and joined the Adver at the start of 2008.

She will also be responsible for covering south Swindon and the towns and villages surrounding Swindon, including Wootton Bassett, Highworth, Cricklade, Wroughton, Purton and Chiseldon.

Well good for you James I shall watch your comments on the "TRUTH" of how we pay and dont get, with interest

Will that also mean we get to have a say on what we think or is that to controversial and we can have the leader of the council or the shameful Wiltshire police ring your boss saying "please take this or that off with immediate effect or we’ll put a D notice on you"

Or do you just want us to ring you when someones dog goes missing.

Ok here,s a story for you.

WHY Oh Why havent you got story,s like this in your headlines.

A Government decision to "exile" a terrorism suspect from London on the basis of secret evidence must be revoked, the High Court has ruled.

A judge said the decision was flawed because the father of five, who can be identified only as BM, had not been given enough information to be able to instruct lawyers to challenge his exile.

But the judge said he would have upheld the move if the law had allowed him to rely on the secret evidence kept from BM.

BM, 36, is accused by the security services of being "a prominent member of a network of Islamist extremists".

He was forced, through a modification to a control order already restricting his movements, to move out of the east London area to a one-bedroom flat in Leicester.

Reason.. We dont want to sell newspapers.

Oh I thought that was the plan..

The law is an ****, we al know that.

WE all want to throw scummy extremists like this in a prison far from here. A place like, it starts with Guan and is a BAY somewere.

But you dont want that.

I,ll find something soft for you..

Love it! Not as if anyone's trying to profile certain areas of the town at all!

Where in Swindon did this news story happen? When you understand the answer to that, you might start to understand why it's not in the Swindon Advertiser?

It's great to know who exactly does what, making it easier for readers to contact the relevant reporter. I also like the fact that we have a communties reporter.

Do you and Grand Master Hill intend to allow more comments to be published from online readers, or will they too fall foul of the kingshill axe ? Carry on cutting Davy boy..at least you and the adver kept all of the Expenses fracas under wraps...shame I found out how to access the FOI act (2000) and got a few REALISTIC answers to my inquiries....

Police Exam Stopped Over Cheating Allegations
03-Jul-09

Scotland Yard has scrapped part of its chief inspector promotion exam - over cheating allegations...

It is claimed that one candidate got advance information on the test from a pal who had already taken it.

Two assessment boards were cancelled this week - sparking uproar among other inspectors hoping to get a promotion - and a probe has been launched.

The controversy centres on the presentation part of the exam - and the claim that statistics and other details about it were passed on.

This has been scrapped - but a written test and interviews will go ahead. Former Flying Squad commander John O'Connor said: "It goes against the grain of what the police are supposed to stand for.

"It's unforgivable that the system has been breached like this." He added that all candidates should take the exam on the same day to avoid "potential unfairness".

A Yard spokeswoman said: "We can confirm that two assessments were cancelled this week owing to a potential incident concerning one area of the Chief Inspector process, specifically a presentation exercise."

Two years ago The Sun told how a Yard inspectors' exam descended into chaos with allegations that some of the 562 hopefuls swapped notes on loo breaks. It cost the London force £200,000 to re-sit.
