THE Swindon branch of the National Autistic Society is urging local people affected by autism to have their say in the Government’s consultation for a new adult autism strategy.

The consultation will look at a number of areas affecting those with autism including social inclusion, health, choice and control, awareness raising and training, as well as access to training and employment.

NAS Swindon and district branch officer Sally Grubb said: “After months of campaigning, people affected by autism now have an unprecedented and exciting opportunity to have their say in the Government’s national strategy.

“It could transform thousands of lives, so it’s vital that individuals and families in this area, and those who work with people with autism, tell the Government what needs to happen to bring about real change at a local level.

“The right support at the right time can make an enormous difference.”

The Government is developing the adult autism strategy for England after the NAS/Exist campaign found that at least one in three adults with autism are experiencing serious mental health difficulties due to a lack of help.

The consultation is open until September 15, and the strategy will be delivered at the end of the year.

It aims to address barriers which leave people with autism feeling isolated and unable to get the help they need in five key areas: Social inclusion, health, employment, training and choice and control.
