Circus skills and sports events keep kids active

THE fun of the circus came to Oaktree Nursery and Primary School, as children took part in a special sports week.

Year 5 and 6 pupils balanced on a tightrope and stood on top of each other to make a human pyramid on Wednesday.

The week has been dedicated to enabling the three to 11-year-old children to try different forms of exercise.

Athletics, football and tri-golf have all been on the agenda.

PE co-ordinator Jenna Crossman said: “Sport is incredibly important, especially in our school.

“It is great for their confidence and self-esteem.

“It teaches them to work in a team – something they don’t often have to do.”

The sports week is a first for the school. It started with an Olympic-style procession on Monday and ended with a celebration on Friday.

Key stage 1 pupils also took part in running exercises on Wednesday.

Teacher Jenny Laird was impressed by the tricks taught to her Year 5 pupils by circus skills company Circomedia.

“The children were really excited and had a great time,” she said.

“They managed to support each other’s weight and create a human pyramid. They were really enthusiastic and determined to get the biggest pyramid. They also tried to hold it as long as possible.”

The school is taking part in the Lloyds TSB National Sports Week.
