Youth bands hit the town

TEENAGERS challenged perceptions about youth during a gig in North Swindon this weekend.

Music, drama and dancing were all used to showcase positive aspects of teenagers during the event at the Orbital Shopping Centre.

The event was organised by young people from the Underground Youth Centre in conjunction with Swindon Council’s youth team.

Naomi Reid, 16, of Masefield Avenue, Upper Stratton, was one of those involved in organising the day.

She said: “I think it is good to show that not every young person is going around hitting old ladies over the head.

“We’ve got a lot to offer and that’s what we are trying to show.

“It’s easy for adults and the media to just show the bad side and that makes the situation worse.”

Naomi, who helped to run a sweet stall and did face painting throughout the day, said she enjoyed organising the event.

Ellen Taylor-Kay, 14, from Chatsworth Road, sang an Amy Winehouse cover and also took part in a drama production.

She said: “I think this is a good idea and will show young people in a good light. I think the media needs to show the truth about teenagers.”

Carole Anne Rapson, a youth worker at Swindon Council, said: “The great thing about this is that the young people have organised everything.

“All we have really done is help them out.

“The atmosphere was good and everyone was having fun. We have a lot of talent in Swindon.”

The morning events saw displays of rapping and singing from the youngsters along with short plays performed by youth drama group Starz under the Stairs.
