Threat hangs over town street traders

STREET traders are still waiting to find out whether they will be banned from Swindon Town centre.

A discussion on banning street traders has been delayed until councillors find out more.

Swindon Council’s licensing committee met to consider banning traders from The Parade, Regent Street, Canal Walk, Edgeware Road, Regent Circus and parts of Bridge Street as part of a £3m regeneration planned for the town centre.

But councillor Bob Wright (Central, Lab) said the committee did not have enough information to consider the proposal properly.

Swindon Council should be doing everything it can to support businesses through the recession.

Sam Bray, of Swindon’s No. 1 Street Cafe, Edgeware Road

He said: “We don’t know what the regeneration is going to look like – I think we should. We should clearly know where we are going with this.”

Coun Michael Dickinson (Con, West Swindon) wanted only a temporary ban until building work was finished.

He said: “I don’t think we should be putting such a draconian measure forward and clearing the town centre of street traders.”

Councillor Vera Tomlinson (Abbey Meads, Con) said: “We all know the development is coming but these traders are trying to make an honest living and it seems to me they have been messed around more than they should be.”

Licensing committee chair Eric Shaw decided the discussion should be put back until all the details are put forward.

He said: “I don’t know what the regeneration improvements are going to be but I feel we should as it has a bearing.”

Sam Bray, of Swindon’s No. 1 Street Cafe, Edgeware Road, said afterwards: “It has been like this from the start – Swindon Council should be doing everything it can to support businesses through the recession.

“The council is listening to us though, there seemed to be compassion.”

Deborah Selby, of the Flower Barrow, The Parade, said: “I have sold flowers for 17 year and no one else offers what we do. The regeneration is great. We want to be part of that.”

A chink of light for an age old tradition where common sense should prevail. We have lost our street markets--indoor market--tented market and business in general. The common factor being this regeneration which councillors agree they have no idea what is happening--they sanction payments to the groups planning it all and getting nowhere fast and full of fantasy--why dont the council see the problems--they have just buried their heads in the sand. Maybe if there was parking at sensible prices and enough spaces this would help--instead of cars going round and round in circles looking for spaces that no longer exist. In other words design an accessible town centre and maybe the shoppers will return--seems the free parking is drawing the shoppers and plenty of spaces at the orbital centre--does that not tell our stupid council something?

They probably want the space that'll be freed up to build another "desperately needed" hotel.

On that note, those of you who don't shell out 40p for a copy of the paperwon't have been told about the story hidden away on page 27 tonight.

Average room occupancy was 55.7%, down 26.2% on April 2008and room rate fell by 13.5% to £60.07 dragging rooms yield down by more than a third to £33.48.

These figures relate to April, i.e. before Jury's opened and increased capacity even further.

And yet we STILL need more hotels rather than a music venue??

Who are they kidding

I agree on the extortionate parking charges. Why can you find cheaper parking in Bath,Oxford & Bristol. Much more attractive CITIES & not a souless town

They just don't get it do they?

It's often niche street/market traders and shops that will get someone to come into the town centre instead of going "out of town". So what happens, first of all they close the market. Now they want to get rid of the street traders, I've bought bits and bobs off the mobile phone stalls several times.

I guess Gilberts Cameras will be replaced by a Coffee Shop or stand empty, so yet another reason not to go to the town centre.

Lots of clone town stores (which is what I suspect they want) won't get me into the town centre. I can go to Bath/Bristol/Oxford and get all of them plus those niche shops.

I had to smile at this quote:
'He said: “We don’t know what the regeneration is going to look like – I think we should. We should clearly know where we are going with this.” '.

Well I never 10 years and they don't know what is going to look like, well I never.

Mr Councillor sir, it's going to look like it is now for at least another 10 years. Get use to it. Let the traders stay.

scottyincs: Thanks, I think, for your figures, however they do not come as any surprise, mind you wait for the 'cunning' ploy when they say occupancy rates go up in July. That will be due to the IAT of course but that bit of info will probably be missing from the press release.
