School sends out flu text bombshell

A MUM has complained after a school sent out its swine flu warning to parents via text message.

Maxine Blackmore, from Dover Street, Old Town, believes Lainesmead Primary School, in South View Avenue, Old Walcot, acted unprofessionally by sending out the virus warning messages to parents yesterday morning.

She also said she would have preferred to have received the text before her two daughters, aged four and nine, were dropped off at the school.

“It caused me to a panic,” she said. “I think it is pretty unprofessional of them to do such a thing.

“I would suspect that these warnings are to reassure parents but this made me more worried.

“My husband asked if we should pick the girls back up when he found out - but I decided to just call my doctor to find out more.”

Miss Blackmore received a letter from the school yesterday evening and said that it came too late for her liking, having already found out the news by text message.

A spokesman at Lainesmead Primary School confirmed the text message was sent out to parents with the swine flu warning, but said no-one at the school would comment further before speaking to the parents involved.

The Adver contacted Swindon’s 61 primary schools and 11 secondary schools yesterday to find out which ones had suspected swine flu cases.

Following our calls, six other schools in Swindon were added to the list of those with suspected cases, including Highworth’s Warneford Secondary School and Eastrop Infants School. Catherine Wayte Primary School in Abbey Meads, St Francis Primary in Taw Hill and Lawn Pre-School also have children off school with flu-like symptoms.

Wroughton Infant School, which has yet to sent out letters to parents, said it had three children being treated for flu-like symptoms.

Yesterday the Advertiser revealed that Dorcan Technology College had a confirmed case of swine flu and Goddard Park Primary had one pupil being treated for flu-like symptoms.

Swindon Academy also has one case of suspected swine-flu after a support worker went down with symptoms.

John Saunders, head of Highworth Warneford School said parents received letters on Wednesday night after one Year 10 boy came down with a suspected case of swine flu.

He said: “I am not sure how, or with what medication he is being treated, but I do know he was feeling better.

“We have spoken to the local authority, Primary Care Trust (PCT) and the Health Protection Agency (HPA) and have taken advice from them.

“It has been suggested that we should not close the school.

“However, the letter sent to parents had some advice on general cleanliness and we have been advising children about hygiene practices.

“Although one or two parents have called for clarification our attendance is pretty much normal.”

Well I got the same text and I don't think it was unprofessional in the slightest! In fact I was only too glad to get a message and be informed so swiftly.

The text was well worded and not at all alarming. The school has not only informed parents as soon as possible,it has also taken measures to prevent the spread of germs by using hand gel.

Lainesmead School is one of the best in Swindon and I do believe Mrs Blackmore has over reacted. She would have been the first in line to complain if she wasn't informed swiftly. With some people there is no doing right no matter which way you do it!

It is admirable that the school is embracing this technology to communicate quickly and effectively with the parents. This should be encouraged, not berated!!

If this women feels so strongly about this type of thing then ask the school to take you off the text list and you will not get the message at all. Mind you that will give you something else to run to the press about.Grow up!!!!

Complaining that she got the message so quickly?? Stupid women!

What a pathetic set of comments by Maxine Blackmore. Is she thick or stupid or both? Looks to me that the School did all it could, as quickly as it could, to assist you, let me guess – you would be moaning if you had not been told so soon? I expect you are always complaining about something, right? Get back under that rock you crawled out from.

I wishe people would stop panicking about swine flu, the clue is in the name FLU, unless you have serious health problems already it will just make you feel crap for a week.

Most of these comments accurately reflect the position and john c repeats exactly what I have been saying from the outset of this issue.

Whilst the problem in misleading information usually by the media, comments don't help by ill informed posters like the one who said there was a vaccine when there is not, antivirals are not vaccines. Vaccines take at least 6 months from the date of the outbreak to produce a workable type which is virus specific. The human H1N1 vaccine will not work on the swine variant, which is why it hasn't been used.

I suggest all parents read more than just the gossip columns and the sports pages and you will get the info you need. 'Simples'.

Stick to the subject please. Answer this: Was it wrong of the School to pass on this important health related issue as quickly as was possible (08:15 on a Monday morning) or would you prefer that they had dragged their feet and only informed parents much later in the day? I actually expect I know the answer already! As I say, keep to the subject and make a contribution. I didn't realise that the morning after pill was commonly offered to primary School children? Ah yes, you didn't actually read the article carefully did you?

eko558, threads like this tend to degenerate into personal abuse, just rise above it.

The school used modern technology to inform parents in a responsible way. Parents must have given their mobile numbers to the school to use in such an eventuality.

The school acted admirably some people just want their 5 minutes of fame. If anyone is at fault it is the Advertiser for publishing the interview. It is always interesting when an article like this appears that will inevitably spark 'protest' posts, no author is shown.

Just Brilliant!! I'd much prefer a school sent out a text message at 0815 on a monday morning. Than a letter screwed up in the bottom of the kids book bag on a Weds evening. Faultless and thumbs up to the school.

However I don't see why the school should kept open. For people with Ashtma etc normal flu can be quite bad let alone this. Which is a worry for myself and my son.

I wonder if the school was approached and told they didn't approve or the people just jumped straight on the phone to the paper to have their minute as another moaner. Hey at least they've got a nice little cut out for their scrap book now.

So who exactly did this woman complain to ?
Not the school obviously.
The media !!
Of course.
That's the way to get things done, erm, i mean, that's the way to get 15 minutes of 'fame'.

Or rather, waste 15 minutes of everybody's time.

Absolutely Bob, I just find it astonishing that the WHO, the LHA, the LEA and the WTF! don't just ring the Carpenters directly and ask your advice on any health issue that arises in any part the world before it even begins to affect us.

That would avoid you having to come on here and tap out any more 'I told you so' comments and you could get on with serving customers...

Corking, the school is acting on DoH guidelines. It is your decision as a parent whether to send your child to school given their condition. My son had childhood Asthma and I would certainly have not let him go to school in these circumstances.

It is time parents stopped wanting everyone else to make parental decisions.

My daughter attends lainesmead, I feel that the school has done the right thing, I recieved that text yesterday morning, and was very proud that lainesmead take time out to do this for us, i recieved the text before getting to school so if i thought there was going to be any risk to my child then i had time to act,
Mrs Blackmore is talking nonsense,
she should be happy she was informed, its not even as if there is an outbreak in the school as a reason for her to kick up all this fuss, if she is not happy with lainesmead, then i suggest she takes her children to another school.
Lainesmead do their upmost to help all parents and children, carry on the good work lainesmead!!

Do you think the school really care about parents?
I suspect the teachers wanted a short sweet day in the sunshine thats all !

Bit Paranoid? as a UKIP member, I think that you should really take a step back.
Our Education is providing one service and 1 service only!
A fat and sure salary with a gold plated pension for their Union infested teachers and heads!

By the way what has UKIP got to do with a school following DoH guidelines, being responsible in informing parents, and trying to do their best despite your personal view of them.

1: not every parents has a mobile
2: not every parent is able to access mobile phone (work, drive, sleep etc...)
I suggest if the school needs to inform parents to inform all the parents with every means at their disposal and not only on the cheap and easy side.
As for you, well I truly think youd make a marvellous labour councillor we should talk about this in our next meeting.

Bobfm says...
10:56am Fri 10 Jul 09

Given I have no idea who you are, I cannot really comment as to whether we have met, accepting of course you state you have converted to UKIP.

Quite why the personal attack about Labour I do not know.

I would assume but do not know that those parents without a mobile, however given they would be the mobile generation, would be informed in some other way.

Parents have to provide a number of emergency/informatio
n points to schools.

Swindonistani - All schools operate an emergency action plan in case of fire, flood, disease etc. Schools will ask for mobile numbers. However, parents can choose another form of contact (or even an alternative person to contact). All schools in an LEA area will have a similar plan under the same guidelines.

The complainant would have volunteered her number for this very purpose. Then complains when the plan is actioned. Priceless.

Maybe the fact that swine flu has been all over the media for several weeks now just happened to slip Mrs Blackmores notice - hence the text message from the school came as such a shock & made her panic!!!!!

Or is it just a case of I don't follow the general view on here at times so should be regularly verbally assaulted.

Incidentally I was of course referring to the insult levelled at Ms Blackmore, not one levelled at me.

Not personal just an indication that when certain posters appear their only contributions are either insults or childish rants.

I would certainly welcome a more strident approach to posts than the Adver currently adopted.
