Meeting will look at 12,000-home plan

A COMMUNITY group opposed to a 12,000-home development east of Swindon has backed moves by Tory politicians to challenge the scheme in the courts.

The East Swindon Communities Group (ESCG), which represents thousands of residents from across East Swindon, welcomed a motion presented at last week’s full council meeting to oppose the Eastern Development Area (EDA).

The motion, presented by Coun Russell Holland (Con, St Margaret), pictured, asked Swindon Council officers to identify potential legal challenges to a Government planning blueprint that would see 36,000 homes built in Swindon over the next 20 years.

The draft South West Regional Spatial Strategy (RSS) is currently stalled while the implications of a legal challenge to its east of England equivalent are considered.

ESCG acknowledged the help of North Swindon MP Michael Wills in organising a meeting at Covingham Park Junior School to discuss the proposed development.

The meeting, on Friday September 11 at 7pm, will give residents the opportunity to put questions to Swindon Council officers.

I'm sorry, I've never heard of the ESCG.

Who are they and how do they 'represent' thousands of residents?

They are a group of residents from a number of the villages and communities whose areas are affected by the development. They have held very well attended public meetings and have worked very hard to formulate an approach that appears to have the support of those communities involved.

It has to be said however that this is a community group and not necessarily a Parish Council Group.
