CHILDREN with Down’s Syndrome were inspired by retired racehorses during a special day out.
Members of Swindon Down’s Syndrome group visited Greatwood Farm, near Marlborough, where they were given the chance to get up close to the animals.
The visit was one of many trips the group is organising during the summer.
The children fed chickens and goats and tried on silks as well as spending time with the horses.
Lane Stow, 10, of Upper Stratton, who has Down’s Syndrome, brushed a Shetland pony during the day out at Greatwood.
His mother Clare Stow, 47, said the trip benefited Lane and the other members who visited.
She said: “Lane thought it was lovely.
“He was standing there brushing and chatting away to the Shetland pony as if it was something he did every day. He told him to stand still.
“He also met a racehorse called Timmy.”
“Everywhere you looked, there were horses. And the staff are so welcoming.”
Greatwood Farm is a charity which offers rehabilitation to special needs children through horses.
Head of special needs Laura Jones said: “The group met the animals, explored the farm, groomed our rescued racehorses, tried on some racing silks and I am sure had a great time. We certainly enjoyed having them.”
Nearly 100 families belong to the Swindon Down’s Syndrome group, which is constantly expanding according to group secretary Joanna Messenger.
She said: “We are growing all the time with the arrival of new babies. New families are also moving into the area.
“Being a member means different things to different families.
“It’s good to have someone who knows what you are going through and to have someone to talk to. It’s also about siblings coming together.
“We are open to anybody who wants to get in touch. We are a very active group and are always looking for funding.”
