Tenants sought as centre is back in business

A FADED icon of Swindon’s town centre will soon be back in business.

The tented market is to re-open on Friday, September 25, almost two years after money last changed hands under its distinctive roof.

Today prospective traders will get their first look inside the market since it was refurbished by new owners CJV Properties.

More than 50 businesses have already enquired about moving into the site, including about 10 former tenants.

A variety of businesses, from tailors to tea rooms, are being sought to fill the market, according to management company Keningtons.

Simon Ormrod, a partner at Keningtons, said: “This is very exciting for Swindon.

“With all the work that has been done in Wharf Green I think it makes the tented market an even better location than ever before.

“The tented market can now be a real compliment to the Brunel Centre.

“It is at the heart of the town centre and it’s such a well-known building. Now we have to make sure we get a good mixture of businesses to go in there. We don’t just want 50 mobile phone shops.”

The market has 53 stalls available, with rents starting at £110 per week.

Markets have occupied the site for most of the last 117 years.

The first market lasted from 1892 to 1977 before it was replaced by a car park.

The current building cost £1.1m when it was built in 1994.

However, the new-look market struggled to match the success of its predecessor and closed in October 2007.

The building survived the threat of demolition and relocation before being bought by CJV.

Stephen Hollister, 44, who ran heavy metal merchandise store The Little Rock Shop in the market from 1994 to 2007, said he was delighted to see it return.

He said: “It’s absolutely brilliant. This is exactly want Swindon needs and will give people a mix of what they can buy in the town centre.

“When the market closed it was terrible for us because it was such a good spot.

“The atmosphere in the old market was really good and I hope that’s something that is still true for the new one.”

Stephen, who now trades from Blunsdon Market and via his website, said the town centre would benefit from the market’s return.

“The town centre needs a market and I think everyone will be happy to see it back,” he said.

Boston Ali-Aklaqi, 32, had a tailoring and repairing stall in the market for eight months until it closed in 2007.

He said: “I was so happy when I found out the market was coming back because when it closed it was very difficult for me.

“I had to put my stock in the garage and I did not know what would happen.

“People in England love markets and it will bring a lot of life to the town centre.”

The market will open today for prospective tenants between 10am and 4pm.

Anyone interested in getting involved with the market can attend or call Keningtons on 01793 423351.

This seems rather a high starting rent for some 'niche' businesses that make markets unique.

This could always have been a half-decent market. Let's just hope the owners insist on a certain, basic level of quality this time.
It could just be a little gem if they do.
Although, for some reason, I have a feeling it'll be the same low quality crap it was last time.

Oh dear bobby--less than £20 a day is not bad at all and traders will have no problem making a profit. Its a start and could lead to better things--lets all wait and see.

"This is very exciting for Swindon" - It may have been 160 years or so ago when a market first opened on that site!

"It is at the heart of the town centre ....." - What Town Centre?

This story simply illistrates how short sighted Swindon's leaders really are - Let's re-invent the wheel shall we.

What a crime that it was closed in the first place... I for one will enjoy going along to see whats on offer. Even stalls of cheap goods are better than nothing at all! And lets not forget that this will be a source of local employment at a time when the town needs it more than ever...

Why was it closed in the first place?.

I did say in july 10th,that this market was to reopen(on adver forum).
Im afraid some former traders will be wary.Dont forget some lost a lot of money when it closed. So they now have to pay rent instead of a lease.
Be very wary.

Sorry Bob you over estimate your importance--it was a simple response to your post inoffensive and not argumentative. I have no motives whatsoever and merely expressed my opinion that it is a reasonable rent in the circumstances--altho
ugh from past knowledge this could well be half the story by the time service charges/rates and security are added which contributed to the demise of the market in the first place--we all hope this will bring something back to the centre--i have doubts--but let us wait and see. So bob--do try to lose your paranoid delusions that people are attacking you--engage brain before opening mouth. If i disagree with you be sure i will tell you as a considerable number have before. We learn from others.

I can really see people flogging to Swindon tented market leaving behind the Oracle and Cabbot circus.
I mean why go to the Oracle in Reading or Cabbot circus in Bristol, when you have Swindons icon the "tented Market" ?
It is indeed an icon of Swindon lamentable state: entry level shops, buildings etc...

Come on we all know we cant compete with other shopping centres but dont put this down without waiting to see what happens--anything is better than nothing!!

I loved the old market, the one they so wantonly destroyed in 1977. I left Swindon soon after that, but on the few occasions I re-visit I weep at what's been lost.

So the scruffy tented market reopens after it was closed down with undue haste 2 years ago (because SBC said at the time the whole structure was to be dismantled and moved to London straight away - more lies) and what tenants were left were thrown out overnight, and its reopening now is described as 'very exciting for Swindon'!!!! In what way may I ask? Is this part of the 'visionary, vibrant and bouyant' regeneration of our town? And how does this complement the Brunel centre? Last time I walked through there most of the shops were vacant!
Lets hope at least a few interesting stalls open up, and that its not filled up with the same (mostly) tat that was there before.
Closing the real old market tore the heart out of the town and its been dying ever since.

I'm pleased that the Market is reopening.
It should never have been shut in the first place.
SBC really need to concentrate on the town centre 500% if Swindon is to retain some dignity.

Dont get me wrong, I love Swindon, it just breaks my heart to see how our moronic council leaders are managing this towns destruction.
Another 5-10 years and Swindon, wont even be on any maps!
Tented market or not...

Just a few months ago many of you who moan about SBC on here every day had a chance to do something about it. However, due to the fact that you voted on national rather than local issues, you again returned a Conservative Council.

You reap what you sew!

You weep about a market that was "destroyed" in 1977? I'm glad I'm not the only one that gets upset about such events.

When I pass through Calne I can't help but, burst into tears every time I drive through the town centre, thinking how the Harris' factory was needlessly murdered in the mid eighties.

It was rubbish before, undoubtedly, it will be so again.
Unless they have pumped a decent amount of cash into the market, the place will be the same dreary place as before.

The only good thing is that small businesses have somewhere to start off. Just make sure they sell or provide worthwhile stuff..

SBC are very good at damaging the good local shops... lets not forget the demise of Normans carpet and furniture store, which had been in Swindon for years but got moved when Argos wanted a bigger site; or the fact the hugely popular Brunel Market was cleared to make way for House of Fraser which has since fallen by the wayside to become a bit of jumble sale.
Yes these shops/markets looked outdated but they were popular with the locals, you know the people SBC are supposed to serve. Oh yes, lets not forget who did all that before we start critising JUST the current administration because I do believe it was the labour council. They are both equally as bad as one another and all have misguided attempts at improving swindon with strange notions of concrete arty structures in the 60's and tents in the 90s. Hardly promoting what the town is best know for ... a victorian railway town.
Although I welcome back the tented market, it's hardly Swindon's crowning glory is it.

This is great news, the market had lots of independent retailers which had a variety of things to buy. The Council were right not to let it be knocked down.

It would be equally exciting if the councillors were thown out - but we will have to wait until next year for that .

This probably SBC idea of regeneration.

I Too, to my knowledge, the Council did not vote to close it, the owners closed it and the Council refused planning permissions for it to be knocked down.
