Royal mail workers are ready to strike

MORE than 800 Royal Mail staff are expected to strike for a full day in Swindon.

Workers at Dorcan Mail Centre and a logistics depot next door to the Wheatstone Road centre will down tools for 24 hours in two strikes on Wednesday.

The walk-outs were confirmed last night and follow months of negotiations between union bosses and Royal Mail management.

Jason White, of the Communication Workers’ Union, said he expected 800 mail centre workers to strike from 4am.

He said 95 per cent of the centre’s staff were CWU members, and, of those, nearly 70 per cent had voted in favour of industrial action.

Mr White said the action had been taken after issues surrounding the transfer of Reading and Oxford’s mail sorting operations to Dorcan, general working conditions and the upgrading of some part-time staff to full-time workers had failed to be resolved.

He said: “This is a last resort. We have tried to talk to management – our door is always open.”

Another 70 Royal Mail drivers will leave their posts for 24 hours on Wednesday following concerns about working conditions.

A Royal Mail spokesman insisted only internal deliveries would be affected and said Swindon residents would still receive their mail.

Contingency measures, including using managers as drivers, will be put in place by Royal Mail.

The spokesman said representatives from the company had met CWU representatives 50 times in recent months.

He said: “We again condemn the CWU for striking locally over much-needed modernisation and change which has already been successfully implemented by our people in the majority of offices in the UK and is working well.

“The changes are all covered by the 2007 agreement on pay and modernisation, which the CWU leadership signed in the presence of the TUC but which they are now reneging on in a way that clearly hurts our customers and our people and damages Royal Mail.

“The union claims to support modernisation, yet acts to destroy it.

“Unfortunately we have been notified of further industrial action to take place in Swindon on September 2 which will affect the processing and collection of mail. Delivery staff will be working as normal.

“Customers who need more information are advised to visit www.royalmail.com/ serviceupdates.”

Mr White responded: “We know modernisation is coming. We have never had a problem with it.”

A separate national ballot about industrial action for all postal workers is currently ongoing. The results will be known next month.

the spokesman for royal mail is a lair.dont belive it folks,it's just a smokescreen to get the public onside.

the fact is that royal mail have not stuck to their side of the bargain and have railroaded things through which are not agreed at all.

postmen and women dont want to strike but are being driven to it by managers who dont give a monkeys for staffs welfare.

Yes, yes and the nasty boys took my ball too. Its long overdue mythical beasts like yetis and dinosaurs realised the age of yore is long over and strikes accomplish nothing but personal pain for the sheep & those of us that are struggling to keep small businesses afloat. From the report, lets hope only "internal deliveries" are affected, in the current climate, sympathy, let us say is rather lacking.

..and the moon is made of green cheese... etc - pathetic doubtless some of the 6m on the dole would swap places - I know I've been there until very recently and it ain't good -yes it is 6m the 2.7 they quote officially have been nicely massaged of course!

I suppose that other old dinosaur and relic from the Scargill era Bob Crow will be bringing the RMT out in support! Mercifully the unions thinking they can blackmail the country are long gone!

Royal mail staff are stuck in the 70's. Deutsche post, the german post office is a european giant and owns several large uk haulage companies amongst other things. Why? it is privatly owned and they adopt modern waorking practices.

Unfortunately, the Royal Mail won't be privatised until after the general elections, Labour needs the unions votes.
Political engineering at its sickiest

Sack the lot of them and open up Royal Mail to other companies (who will do a better job - and probably more cheaply)

Stuck in the 70's, not really it is still legal to have a trade dispute with an employer. As for Deutsche Post, this so called giant is owned by TNT the same company who wanted a slice Royal Mail. Why would they want to buy into Royal Mail, to improve the service? No. To take away the profits and invest in its European operation which is loss making. Both in Germany and Holland TNT are making staff redundant or down sizing to a part time work force and paying the minimum wage, whilst their postage rates are outrageous. The CWU do not have a problem with modern working practices, if you visited Swindon Mail Centre you would see for yourself the amount of new technology that has been sited, that is not the issue as reported in the article and you are clearly not availed with the facts. If you want Royal Mail to be put into the Private Sector then expect even higher prices and a worse service, fact. Have a look at the TNT sites and see how they treat their workers. I suppose you think it is ok for an employer to treat its workers as it sees fit, we are not all sheep some of us are prepared to stand up and defend ourselves unlike people like you.

As for Labour needing the unions votes, Labour is a dead duck, and you may remember that it was Labour that attempted to introduce part privatisation into Royal Mail. Put Royal Mail into the private sector are you mad how much would you be paying for a stamp if they were suffering the real effects of the credit crunch? Think about it, it would be shear madness. As for political engineering what a load of s@+t.

at last a post from someoen who actually knows what they are on about.
people saying posties are lazy, stuck in the dark ages etc have no idea.
people slate the service they get from royal mail-ie one post time late in the day.but in the dark ages they got it twice a day.once early in the morning then agin at lunch time.so this progress is infact a lesser service for the public.
that said when it's sold off(which it will be)people will be calling for its return.
just because there is a recession doesn't=what royal mail are doing to its staff fair.they are imposing ridiculous working hours that will mean child care for their children will become impossible.no regard is being shown for agreed procedures for allocating work.
i also find it strage that people can slate posties when they are probably sat at work posting bile on here.

A strike? Oh, how quaint. What a funny old-fashioned world you Royal Mail chaps inhabit. Bless you, what a charming idea. Now run along and let the grown-ups sort it out.

Good luck , posties - this country deserves a decent mail service - too
many years of Brussels -led " government " interference and serious mis-management have ruined our once great mail service!

With the number of people out of work at the moment how can the Post Office afford to strike because you will be next out te door. Management will unfortunately win. Unfortunately the days of Unions have gone. Look after yourself & dont trust them. There are always cheaper Firms ready to take over your jobs. I know I've been there.!!!
